I’m guessing that since the design for Mario Pony is more based on Captain Lou (who played Mario in the first cartoon they had), it would count since well… he kinda died afterwards.

Only it really isn’t giving us the full quote of him saying it, so it seem a little odd to say he said it was “Mario Mario” but only pick out the names and not the context, context makes a huge deference.  
And with news like that you need to give the full quote or a video where we can hear him say it for us to really beleve that, for all we know he said “Well if you want they can be Mario Mario and Luigi Mario”.

I search that up and found the news rather disappointing and not sure if should taken seriously. For years Miyamoto and his fellow associates have claimed that Mario and Luigi are just simply Mario and Luigi with no last name. Now this happens.
 
I love Miyamoto and all the things he’s done to help revolutionize the way of gaming, but seriously, I really don’t know how to accept this as officially. For all we know he’s probably just joking around like he did with him claiming that he’s Bowser Jr. real mother.

Recently, Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed Mario’s full name is Mario Mario. Who would of thought something from ‘that’ movie would be canon.

Sounds like a possible story arc that might happen.
 
Although, I was more referring to the Crystal Pony design for Mario and Luigi being the main ponified design, but I suppose the concept is greatly undermined. I really like the idea.

It would be too much for me if either one of them said to the mane 5 if Twilight got captured suggesting that she’s in another castle.

Too bad there’s very little fanart of Mario and Luigi ponified in this design. Doesn’t their cameo appearance technically makes this canon in retrospect?
