I think one of the problems with King Sombra is his lines. The problem is not the lack of lines but rather what is his lines. Make King Sombra say crystals and slaves is not threatening at all. It makes him silly.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

@Evowizard25
The whole episode felt like the set up for an awesome magical and intellectual showdown between two brilliant masters of the arcane, with Twilight being tempted by the knowledge of the dark side. Instead, Twilight spent the entire episode way past full retard and Sombra barely amounted to more then a barely sentient fart. Intellectually, the conflict was more on par with two mentally impaired crack babies swinging rattles at each other.

I didn’t say I disliked it, I just said it is different, and indeed darker to the Show versions. I’d have preferred a more 1:1 with the art style. Was all I was saying.

When I was first watching the episode, and saw Twilight using dark magic, I expected Sombra to make an appearance and try and tempt her over to his side…Nope. (Wasted oppurtunity.)

No I agree with ya.. I want to see King Sombra comeback and basically one up Chrysalis. I feel that it just can’t happen though as Hasbro are more compleatly in control of the Show now. That Eps like Party of One, or Lesson Zero. Could not be done now. And lets not delude ourselves for Pony… Those were some very dark moments indeed!

To explain my last post… G4 has had a more classical fantasy feel to it almost G1 like in places. Setting up Luna, as Nightmare Moon was actually a pretty decent, if overused troop to start the show off with. Yes everything just clicks with G4. But that the Show was allowed to nudge the Show in that direction has a lot to do with why we are all here.

@BigMax
Yes I know about the Comics… But that’s its own canon, and TBH I’m kinda so..so.. on the art style. Besides I wasn’t even considering thoses. As I was just talking about the TV Shows…

The reason why I watch the new MLP is because of.. erm… many resasons… I guess, but mainly one reason:
It feels real.

I watch G3 and it’s all frufru and gurly and terrible, I watch G1 and it’s alright, a plain and not terrible cartoon… actually rather good at some points.

But G4 is different, the characters and writing, and VA work and everything else makes it all seem so real to me.

A friend of mine says that he forgot that he was watching ponies at one point because of how the characters interacted.

Sombra… just feels like wallpaper, he was there but wasn’t really doing anything. He needs more screentime!

PS Party of one is one of my two favorite episodes too /)

Someone who gets it! ‘cause this is more or less my take on him too… Dude has some potential, but the shows only towed the line in as in how far to darken it. But, that’s why Party of One, and Lesson Zero are perhaps my Two most favorite Single Episodes. Its probably not so much that the Writers don’t want to make the show a bit darker. But how far Hasbro would let them do it.

Which probably goes along way as to explain this fandom. Would anyone care about MLP it it was a bright pink as G3? I think not…

Yes, but it wasn’t developed.

Compare the brief mention to the changling society that we got from Chrysalis, or the constant inundation of characterisation we had with Discord, Even Diamond Tiara and the FlimFlamBrothersExtrodinare get better characterisation that makes their motivation clear, and their actions believably justified from their own point of view.

With Sombra, we got none of that, 3 second shot of him in power, but from the imprisoned Chrystal Ponys perspective, after that and a fight sequence it’s just him slithering around after being weakened for a thousand years.

What I’d LOVE to see is the “thousand years ago” story of Sombra taking over the Crystal Empire, fighting against Luna and Celestia (and Cadance??) but ultimately loosing his grip on power, and being defeated.
Now THAT would make for an epic film!

I’ve always found the declaration by the staff that Sauron was the inspiration for Kng Sombra to border on insulting. If that’s true, and not something they came up with after the fact to convince people he wasn’t such a crap character, I’d doubt they’ve ever even read the book. Hell, I’d doubt they even saw the movies.

If they had to do an expy villain, this picture points out who the best option would have been. He could have had the same vague powerlust for motive, but pony Palpatine would have been way more entertaining.

Chrysalis was awesome!

Sombra had barely any lines, no background and never explained motivation, he was a villan for the sake of a black cloud.
He wasn’t so much a weak “villan” as a weak character, because he wasn’t given enough screen time.

I’d love to see Sombra come back and have some characterization, but I fear it would be FAR to dark for MLP.
