Just sayin’. “it’s not canon/it’s glorified and or licensed fanfiction” is about as … Reason enough as “it costs money” for not wanting to buy or support the comics, but still check them out when someone posts it for free.
Example: the only thing I was interested in for the annual was the Sunset Shimmer side-story, and I sure didn’t want my money going towards supporting IDW doing more EQG books, so I didn’t buy it- but I was still interested in the mini comic.
As for the photos of those comics, pretty sure those were because the digital versions didn’t come out until much later, though it’s been a while so I could be totally wrong. I just know now that basically shortly after the comic goes live that I can read it for free in the right thread and then make my decision on wanting to buy it for myself or not.
I’m not trying to argue whether or not the comics are “canon” here… I’m aware of both IDW and Hasbro’s stance on the issue. It’s a rock-stupid reason to dislike them or refuse to read/buy them, though.
Though, yeah, the prevalence of digital comics these days mean photo-scans are alot less common than they used to be… though I do remember seeing several of the first issue, as well as the Sunset Shimmer SDCC exclusive before digital copies of those showed up online.
The comic threads are usually directly lifted from the digital comics, so it’s not like we have to wait around for someone to buy one from the comic book store, take it home and upload each page from his camera phone.
Plus, on the “canon” of the comics: she said herself that the show is the One True canon- the comics just get to play in Hasbro’s world, and if the show contradicts the comics it supersedes them. Hasbro’s show.
Storytimes? I believe Cook & Breckel are taking a swipe at the internet (4chan in particular) users who refuse to buy the comic because “it isn’t canon”… but then jump on downloading the first low-quality scan of the issue as soon as it’s uploaded.
Obviously they’ve never seen the storytimes on /mlp/
