Yeah, I agree. I also think it’s cool/cute that Twi’ is helping teach Sweetie magic.
At least they’re trying something different each, and are not holding each other back.

No, both reasons can still exist, they don’t have to be “replaced” for this group of foals, and they still extend to associating with Twilight.
Really, they’d learned their lesson halfway through the episode. Their popularity seemed to have been successfully transferred from “because they know the princess” to “because twilight says they’re cool”. And then suddenly it was still about their association for no reason?
Chalk another one up for “poor communication as the plot driver”
They learned their mistake relatively quickly, and they got a few new skills.
