Since someone left out the tweet Mitch Larson was responding to, apparently trying to make it look like he was trolling the fandom unprovoked, I thought it’d be useful to upload an image with appropriate context.
Not that I expect it’ll change anyone’s mind, since the people who get offended by Larson’s tweets think the only appropriate response to the fandom’s insults is for the staff to say, “We’re sorry, we were wrong and we’ll try to undo it when possible.”

That fact, is actually parodied with the “Thanks M.A. Larson” meme. It’s basically making fun of those who ignorantly assume it was all his idea, or those that blamed him for it. Even Larson himself took part in the meme. (Like threatening to turn Peter New AKA “Big Mac” into an alicorn, Which then created the “Princess Big Mac” meme.)
I remember the Twilicorn drama used to be so bad, even those that hated it too, were getting so tired of the drama began to warm up to the concept. Because of that, it’s practically dead now, even though a few still obsess over it.
I remember some bronies/fans used to give me crap for being “Pro-Twilicorn,” (I even had the honor of being called a “Hasdrone” by DisneyMaster himself, the king of Twilicorn drama) but ironically I wasn’t “Pro-Twilicorn,” nor “Anti” I basically just had mixed feelings over it, and was sick of the drama.
I wouldn’t be mad if it were unprovoked. Alicorn Twilight hate is genuinely annoying, and to make it even better, Alicorn Twilight wasn’t even a decision Larson made. That was Hasbro’s call.

I would also give the example of, say, the Incredible Hulk. Even if you know he’s a good guy now, in the past he’d gone on massive, destructive rampages. Now, if the Hulk suddenly arrived at your party, roaring and what-not, wouldn’t you assume he’d gone bad again?
I would’ve argued the ponies were scared (even before Pinkie got them started) because it seemed like, “Oh no! Princess Luna’s gone mad again!”

The last time they saw her she was meek and humble and softspoken, being introduced by Princess OMFG LOOK IT’S CELESTIA in a big daylight party; retroactively, it’s fair to assume they thought she would go on to be a sweet and friendly princess like Cadance. When she reappeared, it was on Nightmare Night– when everypony was already wired up with scary from Zecora’s badass Nightmare Moon show– and she made the kind of entrance she seems to have thought that her subjects were expecting from her; that expectation was a little out of date, so the Edward Gorey Chariot and the Bat Ponies and the thunderin’ lightning and the ROYAL CANTERLOT VOOOIIICE just freaked them the rest of the way out. Oh that’s a very easy continuity question.
Princess Luna was awoll for the past 1000 years, most people remember her as the legend Nightmare Moon. There was NO deleted scene in S1E2 where Celestia reintroduced Luna to the populace, they turned her back into Luna in the middle of the forest. Judging by her reactions, this was the first time Luna had gone out of Canterlot Castle under Celestia’s safekeeping since she was reformed. She DID just stop the sun from rising as Nightmare Moon afterall. It was obvious she needed time to reintroduce herself to the people.
Twilight and Rainbow Dash realized it was Luna right away, but her flowing mane form was more then a little intimidating and reminiscent of Nightmare Moon when compared to her petite little sister Woona form, which is why it initially scared AJ, Fluttershy, Spike, and Pinkie Pie(intentionally got scared)

If this episode was such a godsend, then why do the problems 4-6 and 10-11 still present such big plotholes in it? Are they really expecting us to believe nobody knew the CMC were friends with Twilight, even though Diamond Tiara KNEW that at the end of Call of the Cutie, and nobody in Ponyville were fanstruck by Twilight being around and a Princess until MONTHS after it happened!? That’s a plothole a truck could drive through.
I never stated I wanted her to be perfect. Hell I never even stated I didn’t want the status quo to be changed, so long as it was not shit writing. As long as the writing is good, I welcome a status quo change. Things can’t stay the same forever right? But the Princess Twilight plot has been almost nothing but bad writing since its start. Besides all the points I’ve already established, to clarify my point on your complaint, Twilight’s obliviousness used to 1)have its limits…
(there’s a difference of sheer denseness in this episode and prior episodes that’s the difference between “oh that’s just Twilight being Twilight” and “they let someone this dense become a princess? I thought she became one because she gained ‘some’ level of wisdom?” Being flawed and getting worse are two different things, and it almost feels like she’s regressing since she’s not only become less humble and thicker then when she gave the love potion to the CMC, she would of figured it out sooner had she learned from Discord’s non-Celestia lesson..don’t be a complete sap)
…but far more importantly, 2) it used to be ACKNOWLEDGED. She’d be clueless for a little while, then catch on what’s going on, and she and her friends would ACTUALLY ACKNOWLEDGE her prior cluelessness.
The “You can’t have it both ways.” is one of the biggest problems THE WRITERS HAVE this season with Twilight. They want her to still make some mistakes like she did in the earlier series…but not have a single character besides Discord acknowledge them, not even herself….thus portraying her as a flawless, one-note rolemodel character in the eyes of her friends, but self-rightous and self-important in the eyes of the fans…part of which is Celestia’s fault because of the role and pedastal Celestia puts Twilight on. I’d be an idiot to completely blame Twilight for how she’s acting right now. They also have made several episodes just for the sake of making her look flawless and the rest of them look like fools, like MMC, EG, Princess Twilight Sparkle, Castle-Mania, Daring Don’t, Rainbow Falls, ect.
If the writers themselves could figure out they can’t have it both ways, I doubt any of these problems would of manifested.
You say they shouldn’t mess with the status-quo’, but somehow your examples seem to show they should’ve changed some of the status-quo’ instead.
Actually, the lack of regard for Twilight’s princesshood, and such is actually my main/only problem with Season 4 so far. (Hell, she couldn’t even get a cab, or plan anything for Manehatten.) I was actually glad to finally have an episode regard it, and that’s why I enjoyed “Twilight Time.”
Twilight’s oblviousness was actually a character flaw she had in some previous eps to, especially when regarding the CMC. (Like telling them about the love potion in her book, and not expecting them to use it on other ponies.) She’s not perfect, just because she’s a princess, and she shouldn’t have to be. Otherwise she wouldn’t be Twilight. First you complain about Twilight being “to perfect,” then you complain about this ep’ for making her to “imperfect.” You can’t have it both ways.
Even Celestia isn’t perfect, she’s been overpowered by villains (Chrysalis, and the vines) before.
How so? I don’t understand what you mean when you say ‘it certainly hasn’t made the show worse’ or ‘taking more risks’? You do realize a show can regress into something dumber if they change the status quo haphazardly right? This is common sense writing 101.
Keep in mind, how I regard S4’s Princess Twilight Arc is also how I see its set up episodes, like S3E1-2 and S3E13.
Risks not taken + Plot contrivences + Plot holes in Season 4 and setup
Execution: Everyone thinks Twilight’s homework is more important then everyone’s lives, including Twilight until the very last second
Execution: Her reason for becoming a princess is vague and nonsensical and cannot be put into words any pony who didn’t know her would understand. Everyone grow as people, Twilight is nothing special in that area
Also, most of the Mane 6 have also grown as much as she has if not more so, and she’s still completely dependent on Celestia’s wishes unlike the others, making the reasons for making Twilight a princess, if there is one, is just favoritism
Execution: Her only orders to the guards is to find the real rulers, which goes no where. (Keep in mind that the citizens recognize her as an alicorn princess almost immediately when they panic for this episode, making proceeding episodes where an alicorn princess is unnoticed incredibly inane)
Execution: She has none. No status quo change where any logic would suggest some.
Execution: We never see that transition at all. In fact, most of the preceding episodes have her in the Everfree Forest or away from walking around the town. When there finally are some episodes, she’s ignored as if nothings changed, and many episodes later, only the kids try to get close to her when they’ve known she lives in Ponyville for at least a month now
Execution: No reaction at all, she becomes a plot hole called the “Unnoticed Elephant in the Room”. When she’s goes to Daring Do, Manehatten AND Rainbow Falls, no one blinks an eye at an alicorn princess
Execution: Nothing is mentioned in the slightest about Celstia and Luna’s past and the episode is wasted on everyone else looking like fools and cowards while Twilight comes in and solves everything looking perfect.
8)Setup: Twilight accidentally turns Fluttershy into a Bat Pony
Execution: She refuses to take ANY direct blame even though it was her spell that messed up, using the term we and not begging Fluttershy to forgive her. All 5 made a hasty decision, but it was only Twilight’s idea and magic that turned her into a monster
Execution: Twilight of all people points this out without even realizing she’s being a complete hypocrite. Why not AJ? She has enough wisdom to point that out without accidental hypocrisy.
Execution: Cadense completely coddles Twilight from gaining this character development by saying she enjoyed the day to spare Twilight’s
feelings.
Execution: Like an overly trusting complete SAP, she trusts the intentions of the little kids entirely and it takes Twilight almost the 19 minute mark to realize the situation even though their were dozens of clues. Even after so many episodes AND princesshood, her common sense is as dull as ever.
That’s…that an ENRORMOUS amount of issues, contrivences and plot holes.
Now lets take a loot at actual good writing and
actual risk taking in S4:
Flight to the Finish: They actually maturely address Scootaloo’s flight issues, and RD’s bond with Scootaloo and SB and AB’s bond with Scootaloo grows firmer
Rarity Takes Manehatten: They present an antagonist with no villain like qualities, just ammoral ones. Rarity shame at her own frustration makes her doubt who she is and she even sings without her accent. Her friends as a whole and a complete stranger help her realize her confidense
Pinkie Apple Pie: This episode cements AJ’s friendship with Pinkie Pie, which had never been fully flushed out until now
Pinkie Pride: Pinkie actually doubts her worth, not just her friendship. It creates a really heart warming episode.
Filli Vanilli: Lots of risks taken in this episode…even though it kind of underplays Fluttershy’s development in Hurricane Fluttershy, it was still well done
Huh…none of those episodes have anything to do at all with the Princess Twilight Arc. In fact, ALMOST all of the major problems of this arc seem to stem from the Princess Twilight Arc. There are other problems like a dues ex machina comic book, Spitfire suddenly becoming Lightning Dust, and Rarity regressing to Season 1 Rarity, but those are only one time issues.
I don’t hate Twilight becoming a princess AT ALL as long as its well written. That being said, I can’t think of a single plot element that has damaged the writing of the show more then Twilight becoming a princess. If you can list one, please let me know.
