Considering that there’s a white square in the lower left corner, that does seem like a reasonable explanation. Granted, I don’t know why anyone would play chess sideways, but perhaps Twilight wanted a bit of extra challenge.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen people play chess with the board sideways. Usually, each player sets up their pieces right in front of themselves, and move them forwards (rather than right and left).

You are right, though, that Death would have to really suck not to eventually win against a single king with a king and rook.

So unless Twilight has something hidden from us behind her head, this is her darkest hour.

I think it’s simply that they have the board sideways. In which case whoever moves first probably wins (unless B can draw W despite the queen). If your theory were right, though, (b8, Rb8:+), it would almost certainly be deaths victory. Well, unless he really doesn’t know how to mate with rook and king, in which case I’d wonder why anyone dies at all in Equestria - after all, it should quickly become common knowledge that you can challenge death to a game and chess, and that he sucks at it XD

Since the white pawn is in an impossible position if Death were playing white, I must assume Twi is playing white, and Death is black.

We have arrived to watch the game just before her pawn is promoted to queen… and Death kills it.

The game then continues until Death is stalemated, or forever as she gets chased all over the board and unable to actually take out Death’s king.

Unless there is a piece on the board, hidden from us behind her head.

Twilight looks upset by the fact that Death has a pawn in a position it can’t possibly reach. Pretty sure the game is guaranteed to stalemate unless death is an idiot, though; you CAN mate with just rook and king, but I’m not sure it’s possible to maneuver into that without them making a mistake.

They should be playing Battleship, Clue, and Twister.

Do I get points for making a reference to a movie that used Hasbro games?
