I suppose, but I was thinking more along the lines of:  
the Mane Six is all very well and good, but while they’re busy doing Boss Battles and other Element-related things, all the normal ponies are panicking and being traumatized…and a lot of them are probably dying. the Royal Guard and Wonderbolts, when present, are pretty much useless. To use a metaphor, the fire is extinguished usually after quite a long time, but nopony is pulling the bystanders out of the blaze.  
Enter the Background Six. A confectioner, three musicians, a mailmare, and a watchmaker/historian/theoretical physicist/timekeeper/whatever your headcanon is. Unlike the Bearers, there is pretty much nothing remarkable about any of them. No artifacts of godhood selected them, no magical shockwave united them for life, no divine force lies at their call. They are, for all intents and purposes, background ponies.  
The only reason they are remotely special (aside from a possible doctorate in something completely academic) is that, when the chips are down and the ponies of Equestria need someone to pull them out of the fires, the Background Six step the fuck up.

another fitting comparison would be:  
mane 6=justice league(the big shots that everybody loves)  
background 6=doom patrol(the outcasts and weirdos)  
and as always,the internet likes the outcasts more than the big shots(and i’m no exception)

Mane Six: Problem solvers.  
Background Six: Damage control.
