I was just talking to Timmo and he’s clear that this was his point of departure for this comic from that fanfic.
I thought Rarity got mad at Spike for un-petrifying her. But like you said she calmed down.
Tho if i remember correctly, in the fanfiction Rarity gets mad at Spike for petrifying her, since it was never her wish. Tho Spike managed to calm her down by telling her that her beauty was admired by everyone and that she was quite inspirational. She ends forgiving him.

I think Spike had Rarity petrified when she was about to die so they could die together.
