What if the pony of shadows is really just another Zebra and maybe Zecora came to the Everfree Forest in the first place because she was looking for him/her?

I totally agree that it could be a totally new character, or a new monster, or a shout out to the posiblities of ghosts/paranormal beings.  
It was only thrown into the episode as a classic ending “but there really is a monster” that horror films do when the end nicely.
 
I just happen to have seen a striking resemblance in the shape of the shadow to Zecoras hood, and the eyes are also very similar in colour and shape.

They both have a glowing effect, if you look closely. But I will agree, the animation has gotten much better in general. The season 4 premiere episodes were beautiful

I do love how this image also provides a comparison to how the animation for the series has gotten better and better over time. Note that in the Castle-Mania image, the eyes actually have a glowing effect.
