Killing the vines wasn’t that important. Getting the elements back in the tree was what REALLY needed to be done.
 
If Discord told them about the vines, they would’ve made him get rid of them since they were kind of his fault, and the mane six wouldn’t have willingly relinquished the elements to the tree.
 
Alternatively:
 
Discord actually couldn’t do anything about the vines and didn’t want to admit he was sort of impotent in that regard.
