“Don’t worry, my child, those horrible stories should have never been written about such a sweet and nonviolent pony like you. Now, I gotta go temple moneychangers on the ass of that writer.”
After reading cupcakes
Celestia and Luna being goddess is more of a fan interpretation than canon. The show tries to not paint them as the most powerful entities in the world. Discord and the tree of harmony are defiantly more powerful then them and even queen chrysalis can overpower Celestia on a good day.
That being said the world of Equestria is not following Christian Cosmology. (If anything there are Elements of Paganism and Taoism in the Equestrian Cosmology, but i am reading way too far into the show to come with these notions)
Some people just need characters to hold the same religion as themselves. They use pop culture (you won’t believe how much Christian sonic art is out there) to express and validate the their religious beliefs. While I find this need as a whole quite curious I don’t find the use of MLP in particular to be worse than any other franchise though. After all pokeballs and Great Cathulhu aren’t part of Equestria either.
I’m late to the party here, but I just have to say that as a Christian myself I find this bizarre on all accounts. My main issue here is that Equestria already has its own theology with Princesses Celestia and Luna being its primary gods, so… Just… What the heck? I’m so confused.
This picture is a pretty common theme in evangelical Christianity. This a “pinkie pie found Jesus and accepted him to her heart” picture. She is crying because she understand that up until this point she was a sinner, and Jesus is comforting her because now she is saved.
There are two problems with this picture:
Too late for that. Did you see the argument that took place on the last page?
Well Celestia does far more for equestria than I’ve ever see Jesus do, and she doesn’t even do much. If that were what he said he should be told to fuck off. To be punished for your beliefs (hell), especially for eternity is absurd and unjust, especially when you realize your beliefs are not a choice.
Thank you much, but I DON’T actually expect to change the minds of the people I’m talking to here. I’m just doing this in the hope that others WATCHING this might be open of mind enough to weigh the two sides on their own merits, and maybe I’ll have done this world a favor.
@BP1:
So congratulations, beneath the cluster of petty insults and self-satisfaction you’ve defended what?
A subjective moral code which has a sphere of influence the span of an arm’s reach? A meaningless manifesto which will be forgotten in ten minutes and completely non-existent in a hundred years?
I can only shake my head when I read something that dumb.
First of all, my morality is only subjective if you count the human species itself as the aforementioned “subject”. I don’t believe in an “objective” morality because I doubt if the husks of dead stars or the rings of Uranus give one shit or the other about what a bunch of apes on a glorified rock are doing with their spare time, but I DO know it matters to the apes occupying that glorified rock greatly.
As such, I believe in a morality that seeks to allow the most personal freedoms while eliminating the most harm. Simply put, I think the right for me to swing my arm ends at the other guy’s nose, no closer and no further. This is more than enough to produce a society in which we can all live as safely as possible without being overly restricted in meeting out our personal pursuits.
And as to the comedy gold about “a sphere of influence the span of an arm’s reach,” then I think you ought to take a look outside one of these days, because you’ll find a lot has happened since that whole “Enlightnement” thing and that whole “Rennaissance” business.
Namely that the secular worldview has been growing steadily for hundreds of years and all but engulfed every aspect of life that people actually take seriously, while the religious one has all but fallen by the wayside where it belongs.
For instance, the rise of Democracy got a jump-start when a certain group of deists set out to form a new nation based upon secular principals and the rights of the individual and did away with kings and gods. You might have heard of this country: it’s called the United fucking States.
And in case you need a history lesson, the United States, spitting in the eye of the divine right to rule, stands a planetary gargantua to this day, while the Catholic Church which at one time ruled the fucking WORLD is a body with such paltry influence by comparison that they’re more often than not the butt of jokes.
Also note that in first world nations we have done away with spectral evidence in our courtrooms and the modern scientific community is a godless edifice that has taken us to distant worlds, mapped the genome of the human species and now allows us to communicate great thoughts to each other by bridging the vast distances between us on sunbeams.
It’s clear to anyone with the eyes to see it that while the vast majority of the Earth’s populaion is religious to some degree, the form of that religion is changing and religiosity itself is diminishing with every new generation
In other words, that “flash in the pan” ideology you tried to diminish has already WON the war of ideas, and the only thing seperating you from the place of the American Confederacy or those that silenced Galileo in the annals of history is time.
An empty universe where the only morality needed is the one that doesn’t get you blackballed?
Of course your religion would make you blind enough to the Universe so as to call it “empty,” when clearly that Universe is fuller, richer and more fascinating than anything in your book of fables could have dreampt, if only you’d pick up a few books and look at what’s actually out there.
I don’t know what voting has to do with anything, but if you’re trying to tell me you’d rather a dictator made everything simpler for you than to have a democratic process that can be corrupted or manipulated, then I can only find that rather sad.
@BP2:
I read about 2 paragraphs, and ended up bored.
Well I’m sorry, but Ms. Frizzle, Doctor Nye and fucking Big Bird aren’t always going to dress the education bits up to entertain you when people discuss fact and contrast it against fiction. My capacity to amuse you is utterly irrelevant to whether or not what I’m saying is valid.
As to everything else you said, I’ve already clarified my purposes in this discussion to Techy Pony.
BP4 and
BP5Like ender said, that’s what the freaking book says happened. Unless some other story I’ve never found expands on this event, anything the pastors say to spin this like it’s not so bad are making shit up to soften the fact that God made two bears rip forty-two children apart.
And I don’t care if it was for mocking his prophet, his baldness or the size of his pecker; if God has skin THAT thin, in regard to CHILDREN no less, then how wise and secure about himself can he be?
Although it was also mentioned that Elisha himself might have been acting outside of your God’s direct involvement, in which case I STILL have to call him out for not even slapping him on the fucking wrist for using his power to murder children en masse, because evidently he didn’t have enough problem with him doing so to warrant mention elsewhere.
Protip: There is not a single commandment and rule in the Bible that is given ’just because’, if you actually seek to read God’s reasons.
That so? Care to elucidate on that, or are you just posturing as if you had a leg to stand on?
Tell me then, under what circumstances, and why, is it moral to own another human being, or to rape women of the tribe you were just commanded to destroy? In fact, why were such massacres given a free pass by God when otherwise, he’s said murder is a bad thing? Or does that only apply to other Jews, so fuck the rest of “God’s children”?
That dose not make things better for BP side…
The story of the bears comes very close to other stories of miracles by Elisha. It Seems that the reason this those stories were put in the book was to show Elisha as a powerful prophet (this comes right after a story where Elijah promise him twice his powers making Elisha the strongest prophet in the Bible). The Biblical author most likely didn’t really think to much about how these stories paint Elisha morally, or how dose this reflect on god for that matter.
I think the point he was trying to make was that it wasn’t simply because he was being called bald, as much as it was because they were indirectly mocking God, since Elisha was his prophet.
“This shows how much little you actually know of the Bible, if you really think that was because they just called him bald.”
That’s what the bible says:
“23 From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, some boys came out of the town and jeered at him. “Get out of here, baldy!” they said. “Get out of here, baldy!” 24 He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the Lord. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the boys. 25 And he went on to Mount Carmel and from there returned to Samaria.”
And the original Hebrew text says the same thing. I know i can read it.
Did you know that someone wrote a separate article about this story in the Hebrew wikipedia? Apparently according to Jewish theologians Elisha takes the blame for attack. (According to them, once chosen by god, prophets could cause miracles of their own free will)
“God doesn’t strike me as “patient,” nor does he seem to reserve his horrors for the worst of the worst. This is the guy who granted a prophet’s request to send fucking BEARS to maul and massacre a group of children because they made fun of him for being bald. Subtlety and restraint don’t seem to define him very well.”
This shows how much little you actually know of the Bible, if you really think that was because they just called him bald.
@Techy Pony
“Your bible’s morality is not even moral, you’re told to do something because it will benefit you (heaven) or not (hell) and so is horribly selfish and not truly moral.”
Protip: There is not a single commandment and rule in the Bible that is given ‘just because’, if you actually seek to read God’s reasons.
If you’re too pathetic and conceded to consider someone’s point then you’re the childish one. Confirmation bias at its best.
You clearly don’t realize that the morals religious people believe in or think are the “right” ones and the “right” interpretation match their already existing morals and biases. Your supposed “objective” morals really are by no means taken objectively.
You also don’t get the idea of secular morality. Myself and most other atheists question current accepted ideas of morality and figure out through reason what is and isn’t moral. Secular morality will not be forgotten as it’s backed up with reason where as what the bible teaches is not an thus is not worth accepting. To teach what is and isn’t moral without explanation of why and then punishing for not blindly following these morals on faith is absurd. Your god would know that’s how I feel, as he supposedly made me that way, and then punish me for his “gift”, if that is your god’s ways you can be sure I won’t be thanking or saying a prayer to that god. Your bible’s morality is not even moral, you’re told to do something because it will benefit you (heaven) or not (hell) and so is horribly selfish and not truly moral.
For fucks sake, shut up. Seeing people like you argue, is like watching 10 year olds yelling at each other on a play-ground. No one gives a flying fuck what you think. This is the internet, you’re not gonna change someones perspective on religion. Especially when you’re writing 10+ paragraphs about it. I read about 2 paragraphs, and ended up bored. So if you can’t handle what someone believes in, then you should probably grow a pair.
So congratulations, beneath the cluster of petty insults and self-satisfaction you’ve defended what?
A subjective moral code which has a sphere of influence the span of an arm’s reach? A meaningless manifesto which will be forgotten in ten minutes and completely non-existent in a hundred years? An empty universe where the only morality needed is the one that doesn’t get you blackballed?
Because most people are Christian, so they like the image I guess.

WHAT IS THIS SORCERY!?
