I guess those are supposed to be CS gas canisters, but the most probable explanation is “Hollywood”
As for the huge muzzleflash… I have no idea.
And the idea of the desing was to able to shoot a lot of grenades in a short amount of time when ambushed or something, I dunno.
I guess you could load it with beehive and use it as an overpowered, overweight shotgun.

It’s a Hawk MM1 grenade launcher. It’s more or less the predecessor of the Milkor MGL, only in steroids.
Some kind of grenade launcher.
