Too be fair that does seem to be the case since his big deal seems to be spell casting, not brawling. If we assume that “working out” magic takes levels of dedication and time similar to maintaining intense physical fitness (not unreasonable) then physical strength might well be way down the list of what the guard cares about in unicorns.
Oh, it’s totally cliche, but I think that’s the point. I mean, there’s a reason two of the comic covers (and even a few internal panels) are “Say Anything” references. Cook/Price love them some pop culture, so poking fun at terrible 80s movies seems like the inevitable result of them doing a high school flashback arc.
