How does having a strict training regimen translate to military? Did anyone there ever even imply that it was military? What kind of military induction lasts a week? Why wasn’t Rainbow called a member of the military if that was military?
And for the record, that was one of the weakest BMT take-offs that I’ve seen.
It was the training camp for an athletic team. Of course they’re going to have strict standards.
Also, they were deployed in combat against Giant!Spike so they definitely have purposes other than civilian ones.
At most, that was civilian rescue, but given that their captain didn’t go with them, I think that they were just a bunch of good samaritans.
Given that the Manes have been involved in more official operations, that would make them military, if that’s the metric that you’re going by. We’ve seen Applejack go into the Everfree to rescue Spike. Does that make her military? Fluttershy calmed Cerberus? Rarity talking down the Diamond Dogs? Rainbow Dash setting up as a super hero? All the Mane Six in all three season openers?
Wonderbolt Academy was basically bootcamp, and Spitfire was being a drill instructor. That is military stuff. Also, they were deployed in combat against Giant!Spike so they definitely have purposes other than civilian ones.
For no obvious reason, the Equestrian military seems to be male only. It might be because Equestria is in peace time, but that’s about the only job where a mare would have to pass as a stallion.
There’s no stigma to female combatants outside of the Guard, so I don’t know what the deal with that is.

Really? That made me more convinced than ever that it was a civilian organization. Rainbow’s training in Hurricane Fluttershy was closer to military discipline, and that was still a far cry.

It depends on whether you think the Wonderbolts are part of the military (guide book says otherwise, but everything from “Wonderbolt’s Academy” says yes) and since they have Spitfire as a commanding officer…
The exception being the Wonderbolts, which seems to be the only co-ed branch of the military.
Equestria’s military seems almost exclusively male, though.
It’d probably work.
Have to pluck the eyelashes as well, but since some mares wear fake ones anyway…
Of course, Equestria seems to be slightly more matriarchal, so if there wasn’t some form of gender equality, it’d be more a stallion trying to pass himself off as a mare.
Mulan’s cover name meant something like “Pretty Face” to begin with. Just claim to have an effeminate build.
