All this drama is missing a fair chunk of context.
 
First off, he flat out said what the money was going towards and never claimed to need it. It’s at least a grey area between guilt-tripping and generosity as far as the followers go.
 
Second, at the time of asking this wasn’t going for very much (expected final bid of $50 US IIRC), until Derpyhoovesnews and Equestriadaily gave the auction a lot more exposure with their articles. Then the bidding got ridiculous with the final bid being $760 US.
 
His more diehard fans kept chipping in, so he stayed in the running. To say he was about to spend $500 on a toy is misleading; he and his followers were all about to spend $500 on a toy. And remember that he was initially intending to spend about $50 on it - a price not unheard of when it comes to personal indulgences for most Americans.
 
This isn’t so much defending Jitters/BDR (I do have some minor issues with the artist’s content) so much as an attempt to set the story straight. Based on tumblr and 4chan there’s a handful of very vocal critics trying to make a mountain out of this molehill and that’s the sort of dirty politics I don’t care for.

After seeing countless instances of money-begging in the furry fandom, and now here, I think it’s safe to say that fandoms have become popular places to beg for money.

He also came to his sense and refunded everyone, so…
