Wow, this has been done in a lot of things apparently. Link to the Past has this too, its how you get the upgraded boomerang.
 
Find a fairy cave behind a waterfall iirc and it asks you if you want to throw an item in. Use the boomerang there and it upgrades it to a better version, nearly the same text too. Also fills any bottles you use with the potion that restores hp/mp.

This remind me of one Chapter in Doraemon. In that chapter, Gian fell in a pond, then a lady came out with a handsome Gian and ask Nobita and Doraemon whether this handsome Gian is the one they dropped. After Nobita and Doraemon answered no, the lady granted them the handsome Gian who they don’t know what to do with. On the other hand, the Gian desperately try to get out of the pond, only be pulled back by the lady.
 
The last panel of this comic especially resembles that chapter.

Ok, I remember seeing this same story in the old Star Wars Droids/Ewoks animated series in the 80s. Princess Kneesa dropped a bracelet in a pond and a lady came out and retrieved a really nice jeweled one that was much fancier than the one she dropped and asked if it was hers. She answered truthfully that it wasn’t so the lady retrieved her real one and gave it back.

Poor unicorn Twilight was exiled after that by alicon Twilight. It was very sad.
