Koopa can take their shells off and put them back on. They’re treated more like coats than body parts. In the worst case scenario, she just gets a new one from a store.
I’d wonder ask how koop physiology works, but Bowser has a gland in his butt that turns him into a giant, so I’m pretty sure that the answer is “however they want.”
