I think the point is that while in cells, there was still the army of converted moon creatures + NMR outside. Once Spike got there and told them there was only Dingus/Larry outside, that made escape much more feasible and thus Pinkie produced said key.

Also, less a deus ex machina since we see Pinkie wiggling in #7.

Bear with me here. The cells prevent Twilight from using her telekinesis. This is shown. The locks are on the outside and it may be too difficult to open them with hooves from the inside, even with the key. Therefore, Pinkie held on to the key until Spike arrived, who is outside of the cells and has hands.

Because Pinkie is a genius and saw that they had to first realize the power of friendship while they had some time to talk, otherwise they wouldn’t have been able to beat Nightmare Rarity. Also it gave time for Spike to catch up with them. Yep, stickin’ with that. Pinkie’s too smart to be dumb. XP

Okay, not going to lie, I hate it when stuff like this happens. yes, there is nothing to defend Pinkie not just giving up the key the moment she got it, instead of waiting for Spike to save them. Though, the comic would be several pages shorter.

The idiot ball is a tool used for plot reasons. And, in this particular case, it wasn’t done for comedy, so that justification is not even close.

i am sorry but,
her winking to the camera after saying “that dingus wiggled into me and dropped the key” sounds like an innuendo…

But wait, why couldn’t pinkie do that earlier?

She could’ve had twilight levitate it to the keyholes, and unlock the cells.
