I always wondered if “The Enigma of Amigara Fault”, the short story manga by Junji Ito that inspired this meme, was itself inspired by 1933’s Mount Mihara suicides. After Matsumoto Kiyoko threw herself into “her hole”, 945 people followed her within the year. Eventually, the whole area had to be fenced off to keep more people from finding their own hole.
Protip: if you don’t know what “The Enigma of Amigara Fault” is, and you look it up and read it, it will do you an injury. Enjoy.
