I think this one moment could have some very far-reaching consequences for as long as G5 continues. After all, Opaline says she was shutting off every protection spell across all of Equestria. That would almost certainly include ones she was never even aware of. Just imagine how many ancient evils from the days of Twilight or even Celestia had been locked away seemingly for eternity, only for this one moment of arrogance from an overpowered madmare to essentially unlock every single gate in Tartarus and beyond. Sunny and her friends may have defeated Opaline for good just minutes after this moment, but they may find themselves dealing with the consequences of this brazen act from her for years to come.

That’s true. I also believe that after taking all of the Mane Six’s cutie marks she was so hopped up on her victory high that she neglected to make sure her spell didn’t undo the barrier around Spike. That and she’s arrogant enough to believe that one slip up wouldn’t matter(of course she also didn’t know about Sparky being there and undoing her mind control spell).

“Protective spell” includes hers apparently.

Magic works in mysterious and weird ways. Sometimes selective, sometimes all. I genuinely think Opaline wasn’t expecting her own barrier being dispelled because she really thought it would only undo Twilight’s.

Opaline undoes Twilight’s protection spell, but also the barrier containing Sparky and Spike(who’s now free of her brainwashing) as well.

She pretty much set up some of the pieces for her own downfall in this scene, I love that!
