It was never really explicitly explained in the show. I’m pretty sure that is just a fan hypothesis. Though, based on what we’ve seen in the show, I can understand why people would think that.
There are Unicorns that live along side earth ponies in rural areas such as Ponyville and Earth Ponies with rather prestigious positions living along side Unicorns in places like Canterlot.
I’m pretty sure the royals are quite laxthese days in terms of marriage.

I LOVE Spike too! But I think making him a non-talking dog is really dissing his character even more than they already have.
If Twi ever set eyes on stallions, I’m sure she would be able to cope even with commoners. Its his modest nature that sort of made me like her.
Well we wouldn’t want him getting dwarfed by Twilight Sparkle, would we?
