What we get of Opaline’s backstory gives her the same jealousy motive as Nightmare Moon, who I’ve seen complaint of being in retrospect cliche and underwhelming (at least compared to later villains). And when it showed/explained what happened in the S4 premiere, it was plot hole level lacking (being banished before they did anything that would make her feared/explain Luna’s guilt).
In short most of FIM’s villains only came off as better developed because they were conducive to fanon filling in the gaps. Any idea why they’re not willing to do the same for Opaline despite her aforementioned potential (tidbits about alicorns fans would have been exited about years prior)?
And I don’t think explaining would help as such has more often than not hurt by failing to live up to fan expectations (see how much Starlight Glimmer’s popularity imploded once her motives/backstory was explained, which seems to have been the turning point for fans doing the aforementioned projecting).

Indeed, the issues are more nuanced.
Nightmare Moon had jealousy issues. At the end of the day Discord is pure Chaotic Neutral. Tirek felt he had to prove something to his father. Starlight had abandonment issues.
One of the best moments of Season 9 was when Chrysalis felt friendship then rejected it.
G4/G5’s biggest flaws are always when things are left unexplained. That’s why when everything was said and done, Cozy Glow was a terrible villain.
The frustrating part is that Opaline’s potential is there, it’s just not being explored.

So Discord, the Joker and Big Jack Horner are bad villains then?
Cartoonish villainy has a place and can be done well. If it isn’t working for her, the issues are more nuanced than that.
Her biggest problem is failing to counterbalance her cartoonishness by coming off as legitimately threatening, which many of FIM’s villains had to varying degrees.

Yeah, Chapter 6’s pace was absolutely breakneck, and Opaline’s biggest flaw as always is how cartoonishly evil she was. The best villains are the ones you can understand.
Then we’re given almost no downtime before a completely new baddie makes their entrance. It was jarring, and at the end of the day, not very satisfying.

And they only got three hours of peace between with apparently no time to celebrate.
Kinda makes that twilight only kept harmony for a few decades, centuries if you ignore the comics, not seem that bad in retrospect. Heck, G4 despite the constant villains was able to keep peace for at least weeks at a time.
