In fact I think they actually confirmed that he’s not a literally a kid.  
He’s only called a “baby” dragon since he’s a young dragon, not a really old one.  
Nothing wrong with him being a teenager/close to the girls’ age.

Actually… it’s probably the other way round. If that mirror is a pony-made artifact, it could have detected the presence of a dragon- who are universally pretty destructive jerks. And thought to teach him a lesson.

well, they needed a slapstick comedy foil, and anything that even slightly resembled an animal that actually exists (ponies, dogs cats etc.) would be out of the question. also, they couldn’t use pony children because that would send the “it’s okay to beat eachother into bloody pulps” message. they had to choose something that was both durable and small enough for the slapstick to not look like someone put some peppy music over edited footage from DBZ.

Expect a lot of animal abuse.

well to begin his name is Spike… c’mon people, SPIKE!… the most generic dog name ever.  
but I’m not gonna lie I also dislike the fact that a Dragon, one of the most powerful mythological creatures, it’s treated so bad in the pony society DURING HIS CHILDHOOD, then one day years later they will be asking “why Dragons came and burn our villages and steal our white unicorn mares?”
