The dispute arose due to the fact that Twilight and Starlight were painted as exceptional lesbians who do not perceive stallions at all as an option.
And so it’s obvious to everyone that almost all the characters in the community are bisexual.

In the series, Starlight and Trixie became very close because they are soulmates. Come on, they even started their friendship with this. The fact that the Fans started to ship them, as for me it is obvious, however, does not make Starlight or Trixie lesbians. Starlight may even have an interest in Sunburst, even if at the time of the series he is shown as her friend.
Twilight’s love interests are not advertised in the series at all. Of course, it can be perceived as an indication in her orientation of a small affair with Flash, but this is so unjustified and idiotically made moment that it is impossible to take it seriously. So, I would say that Twilight’s orientation remains uncertain.
If we talk about fan ships, then although lesbian couples dominate here, however, this is more due to the small number of male characters.
Judging by the headcanon of this artist, Twilight is almost constantly horny (like Celestia and Luna, but this is not accurate), and Big Mac is able to drive her into nirvana. Starlight in this regard, apparently, is not much different (a controversial point). I consider hearts in the eyes to be a way to show a high arousal of the characters.

Because those two never showed any interests in stallions before. Hell, Starlight was pretty firmly shipped with Trixie in a lowkey way by series end.

Also, the heart-eyes implies some sort of hypnosis or love potion.
