Your thinking of safety lamps which are used in mines with gas, while carbide lamps are supposed to be use in non-gaseous mines, but course coal mines have methane. Late 1800s safety standards… Am I right?
Did they use open flame as a light source in mining though? I heard they had some kind of wire mesh barrier or glass on the mining lamps.
