By double standard I mean you calling a civilized discussion “crapstorm”, while being generally positive to the usual meme with a 1-week likespan.
And I said might. Trying to win Rarity over by using pickup lines, only to fail horribly? Hahapossibly.
I never said it’s not a double standard. However, I can’t be bothered to give a damn.
>The Spike ones were funny because it looked like something he might have said
Hahano.
What is double standard? If it were for me I’d rather discuss this again than see another of these so called memes. (At least the Sspike version were funny because it looked like something he might said)
We have 50ish-comment images tagged “adventure in the comments,” so I think 81 of em qualifies.
Also, to clarify Spike has never shown overt sexual interest in Rarity, he is simply infatuated with her (has a puppy love crush, in other words). I’ve personally seen kids have crushes on each other when they’re still in preschool, and it seems to be the norm rather than the exception, so Spike’s interest in Rarity hardly says anything about his age or level of maturity.
First off, about sexual desire developing in males around age ten or eleven you are incorrect; this may sometimes be the case but not always, and it can actually begin younger for some people (kind of gross but true, just like I’ve known girls that started puberty at age 9). Secondly that never, ever happened with Spike and a pillow in the show and you are delusional, and third Lauren Faust never said that the mane 6 were 12-18, she said that she imagined them in that range as far as maturity goes, but then went on to specify that level of maturity does not always equal physical age (her example was that someone could be 35 years old but have the maturity of a 15 year old). She also says that she thought of the mane 6 as being young adults (“adult” implying 18+ years old)… the quote is actually further back on page 1 or 2 on the comments thread if you want to see it or don’t believe me.
Seriously, are you joking or not?
Star Swirl failed because he lived in a time of institutionalized racism. He’s from pre-Equestrian times, when the three tribes hated each other. Not the best time to learn about friendship.
Nah it works as a bookend test. The episode itself dropped the ball though. She sent her student to go out and learn about friendship, and then gave her a test which Star Swirl failed because I presume he was a stereotypical ‘wizard in a giant tower’ kind of guy with no friends to complete the circuit. The setup worked, but everything past that was a massive trainwreck. We really needed to see her put more effort into it.
>In a recent episode he humped a fucking pillow with her picture on it. I’m still surprised they got away with that gag*
The fuck are you talking about? That never happened in the actual show.
Which episode did Spike hump the pillow in? Can I see the clip?
I’d estimate his age to be about thirteen. In a recent episode he humped a fucking pillow with her picture on it. I’m still surprised they got away with that gag*, but that was clearly a sexually driven act. Also the girls are intended to be viewed as teenagers living in a society where they have the same autonomy as adults. In season one, faust had stated that they were in the 12-18 range. Rarity is most likely 17, and yes a 17 year old can run a small business. The guy who founded Subway was only 17 at the time. The only one out of all seven of them who engages in work a real teenager can’t do is Rainbow Dash. Teenagers can’t work as meteorologists, but they can volunteer at libraries, pet sit or take care of animals living near the teen’s yard, design outfits, work as a counter clerk, pastry cook and delivery boy/girl for the local maltshop, and do chores around a family run farm.
*Although, Berry Punch is always drunker than Barney Gumble and Otis combined and derpy would have been driven out of any real town by an angry mob.
Twilight got into that school because she was a prodigy for all we know she may only have been two at the time.
Fixing that spell came across as a lot less impressive than figuring out how to wield the Elements or defeating Discord.
As far as tests go, finishing that spell has pretty anti-climatic. If they wanted to make Twilight a princess, they could have chosen a more impressive time to do it.
I’ve actually got the sneaking suspicion that Celestia meant for things to go down differently in the Crystal Empire so that Twilight would have gotten crowned then. The thing with Star Swirl’s book was just a fall back plan.
@candrew
Yeah, I think that we’ve gone past anything useful or interesting in this discussion. Later, dude.
It’d be nice to know if magic kindergarten was real or not, but the show doesn’t seem to like to give any sort of detail about magic. Even less so than concrete information about ages or time passed.
Dude, like I said a couple of hours ago, if you think that, its fine. I disagree. I don’t understand why you consider this the lynchpin of your ‘there is no magic kindergarten’ platform, but let me reiterate my opinion so we’re clear.
Even if all you said is true, and I accepted it as true, it does not in any way, shape, or form disprove the possibility of ‘magic kindergarten’. Simply because she doesn’t think things through when stressed doesn’t mean she made the whole thing up.
You may think differently, but you have provided absolutely zero reason for me to change my mind. As I have apparently provided you with absolutely zero reason to change yours.
My guess is the missing component of the spell was what was necessary for her to figure out, ie another of Celestia’s silly tests like sending her against Sombra. I wish they focused more on her actually solving it though. Maybe a couple hints for the slow kids, like her getting frustrated and reading old friendship reports instead of research books would have made it slightly more coherent. They really could have kept the coronation for the next season. It wasted too much valuable time in an already short episode that was pressed for time as is. But yeah, that’s what I think was supposed to be the whole ‘final level up’ test, it just came across poorly because they had to squeeze the stupid coronation BS into it.
Coming up with a plan to stop time despite not actually knowing if time stopping spells even exist counts as reliable? How?
Never mind using sneaking suits and ducking guards instead of just walking there like normal, which would have been faster and drawn less attention. And her plan to do absolutely nothing, and her try to monitor everything on her own, which both worked about as well as they sounded.
I’d also wager that a guard in the royal palace would probably have walked past the stain glass windows depicting the ponies who saved the world at least once.
The low detail stain glass windows would allow him to recognize someone that’s wearing a full body suit?
Plus, she was with Twilight and could have simply been let in because he knows Twilight.
Possible, and very good indication that it was an unrestricted area. Which, admittedly, Twilight might not have known.
And you have in no way proven that she is unreliable when stressed, that’s my point. I still see absolutely zero reason to doubt the existence of Magic Kindergarten.
I’d also wager that a guard in the royal palace would probably have walked past the stain glass windows depicting the ponies who saved the world at least once. Plus, she was with Twilight and could have simply been let in because he knows Twilight. And yes, she hasn’t been to that part of the archives before, which is why she has to tell herself where the time spells are located. Probably why the door leading to them is locked.
dosen’t that imply that it is new magic, which filly Rarity invented on her own?
New magic is created all the time, since unicorns seem to create their tricks when they get their cutie marks, rather than learning them. Star Swirl himself created over two hundred spells that Twilight knows of, and the large amounts of books on magic that we’ve seen imply that plenty of other unicorns have been making and recording spells.
Why finishing a spell that someone else started counted as creating new magic was never explained, although the spell created seemed to be a big deal rather than the act of creating a spell.
@candrew
She had them hiding from the guards because she thought the Starswirl Wing was restricted.
Twilight referred to it as the most secure, but whether it actually was the most secure, and whether it was actually restricted are unknown. The unicorn guard let them all in without a second thought, and even if Twilight and Spike had permission, he made no attempt to identify Pinkie Pie, and we’ve repeatedly seen that the Manes aren’t recognized on sight.
More importantly, if Twilight didn’t think it was illegal to walk around Canterlot at night, why was she wasting time by hiding from guards before entering the archives? Heck, why was she wasting time sneaking around the rest of the archives if she thought only the Star Swirl section was restricted/secured? I’ll assume that she hadn’t actually been to the Star Swirl section before, hence why she was unfamiliar with how easy it is to get into. She did seem to have been to the archives before, because that security guard knew her, so she should have been aware that entering at night was allowed.
My point was simply that Twilight’s exposition is unreliable when stressed. This conversation in no way disproves that.
I think I can summarize it: Rarity is best pony, therefore everything you’re discussing is justified as a result.
Twilight does really stupid stuff when she’s stressed out, and combined with her desire to be completely perfect to the princess, so it’s pretty in character for her to do something as illogical as sneak in.
As for the spell, I will admit, I over looked that. Still, if Rarity is the only pony who knows it, dosen’t that imply that it is new magic, which filly Rarity invented on her own? Remember how inventing new magic got Twilight wings? That’s just… weird then. The idea that a massively useful spell like gem finding was just up and invented by a filly, and no one else has ever tried anything like it? Oh well, I’ve long given up expecting Equestria to make sense.
So they have more educational levels then ponies in Ponyville, which are the only other unicorns we’ve seen. More affluent people tend to start sending their children to school early in generally. Again, no evidence to suggest Magic Kindergarten doesn’t exist, just me saying why its a possibility.
She had them hiding from the guards because she thought the Starswirl Wing was restricted. I would guess she simply didn’t want anyone to ask them what they were doing, if for no other reason than the fact they had a deadline. No mention of it being illegal to walk around Canterlot after dark on her part, only mentioned by Spike who was making a joke.
Actually, they do. Twilight Sparkle herself says that only Rarity knows that spell, then has to be reminded that she can copy it.
