“Come on, call her Derpy, It’ll be fun!” a classmate said to you, “I mean look at her!” he speaks as if she’s a freak.
You stare at the new pegasus in class, a blue bow in her hair placed there lovingly by her mother. She’s grey in tone, with vibrant yellow eyes, brighter than the sunrise. But her eyes seem to be the problem.
She’s looking down at her book, pretending to read page after page but she can’t focus, the filly is fighting back tears as she hears the giggles and insults circulating.
“Come on.” The classmate says to you again, “Call her derpy, we’re all going to do it.”
You feel conflicted, you don’t even know her real name, but even you’re not perfect. You snicker when you catch a glimpse of her eyes looking off in separate direction. You never thought past that point to what problems they may have caused her. You smile, and nod to the classmate.
The teacher leaves the classroom, the students stand up.
The filly lowers the book as you and your classmates circle her. She looks more and more nervous, trying to look at everyone at once, afraid that if she looked away for a moment someone would attack.
You do attack, not with punches or kicks, but with words. Everypony around her starts to chant, ‘Derpy! Derpy! Derpy!’ methodically.
You start in, a smile plastered on your face as you make fun of the new filly in class for a sin she didn’t commit. Somepony went as far as to throw a sandwich at her, ruining their lunch, but it seemed that if they could make her day tangibly worse, it would be worth it.
Your smile fades as she mumbles something and bursts into tears, they others don’t stop however. She simply cries more and more with each wave of chanting. The filly frantically looks around, tears dripping onto the floor as her cheeks flooded with a scarlet tone. She yelled out, something between ‘Stop’ and ‘Shut up’, it was choked by tears and flustered thoughts.
She runs out of the room, pushing passed classmates and the teacher in the hallway.
Your ‘friends’ exchange laughs and hoofbumps, proud of what they just did. ‘Call her Derpy’ runs through your mind, over and over, the image of the crying filly burned into your memory.
Come on, call her derpy. It’ll be fun.
Edit: Massive shitstorm and downvotes? Really? I posted this because I thought you guys would like it, since you would be able to identify with Derpy. Oh wait, I’m in this most drama-packed fandom in existence. Never mind

I’m okay with her “real” name being Derpy Derp.
I can’t believe who I’m saying this to, but… yeah, that’s a reasonable way of looking at it, too. I’d say that’s more or less how I’ve looked at it, just without putting it into so many words.

@Background Pony Well yeah it is a silly name, but I think that’s the whole point of her treating it like her real name. It was used so often she ‘became’ it and uses it in place of her ‘real’ name. It’s like Pink, Madonna, Slash, Divine, Rael, Prince, and so on. She’s been “Derpy” so long to everyone who knows her, even her own child in fanons that make her Dinky’s mom (I don’t, myself, but it is pretty cute.) that her ‘stage name’ now takes prominence over whatever her real name was.
That’s… actually a good point, thanks. It’s not my personal headcanon, but it’s definitely reasonable.

“Ditzy Doo”, “Derpy”, “Derpy Doo”, and “Derpy Hooves” have all been used officially to some extent; no flaming intended, but I’d say “Derpy” is the most official, since it was actually used in the show even if it was edited out later, as the others have been used only in scripts or on licensed merchandise. It remains to be seen if she’ll get an official Hasbro name from the collector’s set due to be released in August.
Personally, I just can’t think of a pony naming their daughter “Ditzy” or “Derpy”, so I’m OK with using either as a nickname, with a preference towards “Derpy” because I think it’s a funnier name.
The name Ditzy is an actual insult. The term Derp has never been insulting in nature until Yamino made a stink… and what kitty is trying to pull in the image.
her “real” name (and I put them in quotes so I don’t get flamed by all the dramatic bronies) is Ditzy Doo. some fanfic writers use that as her real name and Derpy as the name used to make fun of her. I think her name being Derpy is cute, unless of course if it’s being used like that ^
the artist obviously worked hard on it, and well even if you think her name really IS Derpy; if said as an insult it will hurt. its like the name Amanda; do you think we like it when someone says “hey A-man-duh”. its still your name, except now it’s being used to insult you. So ok maybe Derpy actually is her name, but if ponies are saying it in a mean way to refer to her eyes then yeah she’s gonna feel hurt and confused and humiliated. so chillax people. some people have different perspectives on the ponies. I for one don’t mind if her name is Derpy or Ditzy, wichever is fine.
Goofy = The character who acted like a goof.
Dopey = the dwarf who acted like a dope.
I don’t know what backwards thinking made the artist think Derpy was an insulting name even by the most PC standards, but even then it makes no sense to feel bad that their personal headcanon of a background, Easter egg character is somehow being insulted.
You made up your own idea for a character and then got upset that other people ‘call her names’. That’s not a healthy mind at all.
Well I should hope so. I remember how they basically shut down and beat up on actual disabled peeps around that time who attempted to come out in defense of it, blocking their messages or banning them from their own journals. It really does remind me of creationists being unwilling to compromise, and attacking christians that do as trecherous and ‘coddling the devil.’
There is nothing down that road except ignorance breeding more ignorance in each subsequent generation. You would have an easier time I reckon getting a rural farmer to vote for a communist candidate than getting Internet Justice Warriors to chillax.

Yeah, but sane people don’t even acknowledge the existence of that first group, so Derpy it is. They are nonentities, they are less than the scummy filth on the bottom of your boot and deserve to be treated as such for attempting to abduct a safe and cutesy word for their own twisted thought-crime agenda in such a negative way.
Think of how poorly the educational system has fared ever since they came up with the cockamamie idea that ‘everyone has a right to debate/be heard.’ This attributes legitimacy to crackpot theories such as Creationism and ‘a third gunman’, when in reality there is not only such a thing as being 100% wrong, but it’s possible to build a movement around an idea(l) that is 100% wrong. And this, is one of those cases.
She has none. The closest we have gotten to a real name is “That one pony that lives/hides in a box.”
Everything else she’s been called has been considered an insult by someone. Be it Derpy, Ditzy, or just plain “Hooves”.
While the Original origins of the word “Derp” does not have any real Negative meaning behind it, the English language has a history of changing words meaning to something dumb. Because people are stupid and mean.

How many times does that need to explained? In olden times maybe people were dumb enough to buy superstitious hallucinations and proclamations by ignorant shamans but I thought technology was supposed to move us all past that.
Also minotaurs have hands, and probably some other mythical creatures as well like maenads (hey there is quite a lot of greek influence) so they probably just came to us hoof/hand/claw/talon interchangeably no matter who they’re dealing with.

Err I don’t really share your viewpoint, I think those fanons are ALSO great. I think the idea that people can expand on the same idea is wonderful.
But when someone can present their unique vision, that’s also great! Heck, people may jump on that bandwagon too! We may have, horribile dictu, 3-4 different fanons going on at the same time!
What I wish the people these days would understand is that this is a good thing. And being here on Derpibooru, watching multpile memes pop up, watching which memes will take off and by which artists, it’s a wonderful experience!
THough I admit to you, in secret, that I do consider the muffin thing, and even the “Derpy” name a bit silly. Heck, most people today that protect it aren’t even 4channers, probably don’t even realize that it was picked based on a meme. Even if it became a symbol of “justice” it’s not even really one!
