I never got past College Algebra, excepting one time where my student advisor thought I could handle macroeconomics. Wish I had had pony back then to help me understand the stuff better, maybe then I could have engineering career instead of serving starving college students their ham and cheese sandwiches. Oh well, C’est la Vie.

I would blame Twilight, but I recently read an entire essay on ordinal numbers in the comments of a clopfic on FimFiction (parts of which went over my head) so I think I’m just going to say this fandom has some nerds. I wouldn’t even be surprised if P(maths nerd | brony) > P(maths nerd).

I can’t believe I just wrote a whole paragraph about group theory without connecting it to the fact you mentioned quaternions. As a 3D artist, you must mean using unit quaternions to describe rotations. Rotations in 3 dimentional space are (the non-reflective) symmetries of the sphere and are, naturally, a group (known as SO(3)). Unit quaternions (with multiplacation as the way to combine them) are a closely related group, though not identical, since the quaternions q and -q both represent the same rotation. (The fancy mathematical way to relate them is “SO(3) is isomorphic to the unit quaternions quotiented by the relation q ~ -q.”)
tl;dr: Everything you know about quaternions is a thing you know about group theory (even if it makes your brain hurt).

What group theory is about, at its core, is symmetry. For example, the symmetries of a cube (which are 48 rotations, reflections and combinations thereof) form a group (which happens to be known as Oh). The definition of a group is just the properties of combining two symmetries together (i.e. if you perform one symmetry, then another, the total effect is itself a symmetry) works.
What category theory is about is nothing in particular. It’s nickname is “general abstract nonsense” and we like it that way. While examples of sets are the empty set and the natural numbers, examples of groups are Oh and the symmetries of a triangle and examples of topologies are a sphere and a torus, examples of categories are “sets”, “groups” or “topologies”. It’s meta-mathematics, studying what can be said of the relationships between sets, between groups, between topologies, etc. without actually knowing what kind of objects you’re even looking at.

I never did really get on with statistics.
Neither did I. Had to learn enough of it for industrial processes, and quickly got turned off by the guys who insisted they could statistically demonstrate a problem from a sample size of 4.

That is some math that is beyond my ken. I get what set theory and topology are, even if I can’t do them, even with wikipedia’s help I’m not quite sure I get what group and category theory even ARE. XD
I guess I’ll stick to 3D modeling and art. (even if quaternions still make my brain hurt a little)

No, I think I worked my head around to the point where Twilight’s version was equivalent to my understanding, but with different wording. And it’s over 10 years since I graduated, so my memory is also subject to flaws. Unrelated, but TIL you have a husband, so that’s a thing.

Hmmm, good question. I’m going to guess differential equations (where you guess what the answer looks like, and work backwards to the original problem); statistics (which involves showing how two unrelated things show a third thing to be true, which is actually a lie); and topology (which largely consists of proving everything is or is not a donut).
(also guessing topology is Twilight’s favorite)

I’ve never herd the axiom of choice stated in terms of the carneighsian (lol) product before. I suppose it could work. It would need a different definition than when I learned set theory where the cartesian product gave the set of ordered pairs. I suppose natural way to define the product over a set of sets would be the set of functions from the outer set that map each set to an element of itself, which would recover the usual statement of AC. It needs a layer of indirection to be a useful product in general, to handle multiple copies of the same set.
I’m not sure how leaving out AC can cause paradoxes, unless by leaving it out she means not just “don’t assume it’s true” but rather “do assume it’s false.” I’ve not really studied ZF(¬C), but the possibility of having two sets whose cardinalities are incomparable (they don’t have the same number of elements but also neither has more than the other) is pretty out there.
On the other hoof, including AC yields such fun as the Barnack-Tackski paradox, which I could go into, or just mention that it already has a tag.

You know, I don’t think I’ve actually shown them kissing on camera. I tend to save that, because it is a huge pain in the butt to get pony faces to kiss. XD
I’m guessing profile view is the hard one? It seems like 3/4 view from behind (mostly back of head, and an eye) might be simpler? Or, a top view that would be mostly top of heads maybe (a reasonable angle if they’re lying down)? Of course, those views leave things mostly to the imagination.

I’ll admit that “carneighsian” is a bit of a stretch, though XD
It’s less a matter of the limitations of Blender, and more limitations of how much time I spend. In theory I could have gone and sculpted a new shapekey for that shot, or even done cloth sim, I just didn’t at the time think it would be worth the effort. Not always the correct choice, but oh well. XD

That’s fair. Noted. I’ll probably try to take a more subtle approach in future.
You have such a talent with Blender I’m just always intrigued when you run into the limitations of the tool. And please don’t feel you need to put in infinite time and energy trying for perfection - what seems “good enough” to you is beyond excellent to us.
(BTW, love the name of the set theory. I wonder how many folks recognize that Frisian is a type of horse.)
