I think your memory’s playing tricks on you… the site has “crashed” only a handful of times for reasons unrelated to recently done code changes, and none of them were related to this. As well, Kein never managed to get more than a dozen or so dupes of this in at a time, and there’s nothing about his uploading or the image itself that would cause issues.
At least that was what I heard and a wall of this was what I frequently saw when the crashed happened.
Yeah crashing this site would take a full-on DDOS attack that I don’t think anyone here is either capable of or smart enough to pull off. I know I’m not.

This guy was probably responsible for crashing the site several times with his incessant spamposting of this image.
Derpi didn’t have any dupe detecting systems back then, and the site was on an inferior server. It was also durin a time of frequent hardware transitions, maintenance times, and site breakdowns. Almost reminiscent of what Ponibooru was like just before its demise, we actually thought this site was going to go down with Ponibooru.
Very chaotic times.
