I always felt it was an in universe term to showcase Earth pony humility compared the prideful Unicorns or rambuncious Pegasus. Earth ponies could be a simple way to describe themselves. A sort of “ponies of the Earth or Land” idea. Sort of like how the names cultures give to themselves often translate to “people” or “humans”.

I like that idea. Pegasus is supposed to be one horse and unicorn doesn’t necessarily mean horse anyway. From now on they’re called Cloud Ponies and Horn Ponies. :D

Unicorns and pegasi are not ponies though. The whole “Earth pony” thing has always rubbed me the wrong way. No one ever calls other equine races Cloud ponies or Mountain ponies. It’s identity hijacking.
