That is a good theory
My guess is someone went rogue with a new way to literally turn magic off world-wide. Or perhaps more like turn it down to it’s minimum. Pegasai wouldn’t actually be able to fly without some level of magic. And without magic, Alicorns wouldn’t be immortal. Which explains how Twilight died. Either way without magic, Discord clearly aged over the past few hundred years. And now he’s scared to death of magic’s return
I have to wonder what happened to twilight, sure discord would get on her nerves at times but she still considered him a friend. I always headcanon they would grow closer once all their friends were gone, pretty sad to see they may have went there seperate ways.
Animals likely became his only company after magic was lost for a while
