Also, if you google for Yakutian horses (the Wikipedia article has good, as in both cute (which is surprising to me cuz I don’t care much about real-ponies equines beyond comparing to ‘MLP’) and clear, photos) and have a clue about real-life ponies, you’ll notice they look very much like Shetland ponies (the biggest/heaviest ponies) in overall size, hence why I consider them effectively just another pony breed.

You misunderstand, the both of you did. Pleistocene Park is trying to test if herbivores were what kept the northern steppe intact. Also try and keep the permafrost from melting. And the Yakutian Horse is a big part of that. They were the first animals introduced.

Don’t worry, I don’t speak much Russian, either! I just know offhand that -ushka (-ушка) is a suffix commonly used to form diminutives (often endearingly) of names and such and thought reinforcing her smolness by calling her Smolushka was amusing.
 
I’d say the name fits her in either case; her coat is shades of brown like the bark of a tree while her mane and tail are the colour of pitch.

I don’t actually speak Russian. I just looked up if there was a word in Russian that sounded like “smol” and it turns out their word for pitch (pitch as in resin or “pitch black”), cмоль, does :D
