The tropes weren’t unnoticed back then. History is just whitewashed by the powers that be to make themselves sound better than they actually were.
“Fruit” has indeed been used as a slur for, if not gay men, then flamboyant ones, with the then-popular assumption that flamboyant men were gay and gay men were flamboyant.
The tropes “Camp Straight” and “Straight Gay” went unnoticed back then.

This is an infinite timelines story. There’s already a timeline where the Pony is Shadows was defeated and everyone had teenage dreams in bed.
If the alternative is an eternity in a private Hell constructed from your worst nightmares, what have you got to lose?
At least, will not be that cliché, were things are rebooted without any trouble.
