I just wrote a fanfic “The Day Before”:

which explores the false memories. By complete chance, the story I had envisioned for Pinkie - while not as indepth as this, aligned perfectly with what I wrote, outside of making Apple Bloom a step-relative instead of a blood relative that I had her as.
 
I’m going to be expanding that story on the false memories, but this is now my canon for Pinkie’s memories.

Whether or not anything actually happened differently, they believed that it was normal.

Twilight seemed to be the only one who realized that there was something wrong. Everyone else seemed to accept the situation as normal. With cutie pox, the victim and everyone around her realized that something was wrong.

What I’m saying is that these cutie marks are like another version of the Cutie Pox. They’re miserable at trying to handle each other jobs but they can’t stop it from happening because they are being compelled by their cutie marks to do them. Rarity with Dash’s cutie mark for example is compelling her to do stuff with the sky even though Dash’s cutie mark really represents her desire to fly through the sky, need for speed, and her competitiveness. But since Rarity is not a pegasus, Dash’s cutie mark is compelling her to do “something” with the sky even though she has no idea on what it actually means.
 
The same goes for Pinkie Pie with AJ’s cutie mark, AJ’s is more about her desire to be with her family and help them in anyway she can, so farming’s just one of the ways she can help her family.
 
In conclusion that spell gave the cutie marks and is compelling them to do something that relates to them, but since they have no idea what the cutie mark really means to each other they can only do things that are the closest to complete the tasks the cutie mark is making them do. If they were like normal cutie marks they would not have the “need” to do the tasks related to them.

There’s also another thing to note here.  
The only pony who seemed to notice anything was wrong was Twilight. This seems to suggest that not only did the 5 who’s cutie marks were switched believed in the cutie marks, but everypony else believed it too.
 
One shudders to think what would happen if someone could alter or rewrite cutie marks. Effectively, they could basically “reprogram” a pony. The effectiveness of this as a mind-control scheme is up for debate.

Sorry John Smith, but you gotta open that watch sometime.

I know people who are truly good at something that display less devotion to their craft than Pinkie Pie did when she was trying to run Sweet Apple Acres.

No according to what they say, their cutie marks are “telling” them to do their jobs, like they’re some sort of crazy parasite suggestion and shake it off no matter how much you want to. Especially due to the fact that they’re Unnatural cutie marks in the first place.

Imagine the heartbreak of seeing Big Macintosh healthy, but unable to remember his wife. No wonder Pinkie was so frustrated. She was frowning so she wouldn’t burst into tears.

Now that I think abou it, the mindfucks this episode could have given if it told more about the warped destinies thing would be astronomical.

To think, somewhere, another Pinkie found she couldn’t do her farmwork properly.

Its ok, there were a lot of feels in that episode, but it all turned out for the better in the end.

I had wondered what could possibly drive someone to put so much effort into a task that made them miserable. Could a colorful symbol on their butt really be the motivation, or could it be something deeper?
