I personally find your work so far to be pretty decent. It works, it looks nice and I’m wondering why whoever Background Pony is there has to try and correct or being pointlessly critical of something that doesn’t really look bad? It doesn’t need to be realistic as they first complained.
I think you’ve done a good job, and if you keep improving then that’s cool too.
I’m using Blender, not SFM. But yeah, actual texture would be ideal, though I haven’t found a way to get the entire body textured that looks good. I guess I should try again to find something procedural.
Yeah, ideally you may want some texture too, with normal mapping (and maybe bump-mapping?), and have that cause the subtle Fresnel. There’s fur shaders and stuff to have actual physical fur on the models, but considering how short horse hair is, probably better without. Especially considering what I’ve seen from some other SFM people who use fur shaders, they overdo it, don’t blend it with parts properly, etc, and it ends up just looking creepy.
Point made, though. On reflection I have let that effect creep up to being too strong. Luna is supposed to literally glow, but the fresnel is definitely too high with Smoothie here.
Specifically replicating velvet to make them look softly fuzzy. Sorry you don’t like it.
