When Spike asks where he’ll go, Smolder brings up raiding a pony village and making a home that way, but then she second guesses what he’ll do now that “dragons and ponies are friends” and then blows it off with a shrug.
 
Yes, she is indeed completely blind to the situation, but there is something somewhat unique here… She is stuck 1 on 1 with him for an extended period of time to the point she’s lounging around. Spike is also spelling out word for word how bad this is for him, and to cap it off, Smolder has had plenty of time with the other students to get a grasp of what friendly moments should consist of.
 
Instead, she’s a total idiot or/and getting off on bullying a smaller dragon.
 
It still stands that this sort of BS uncaring interacting is why I detested Smolder’s inclusion because it meant that Spike would NEVER get to spent ANY time with Ember, one of the friends he actually fought tooth and nail to make. No, instead, they have “new dragon” show up who has a blank check to be as uncaring, malicious, and ignorant as the plot wants.

She seemed pretty obviously to be the long time team member laughing along with the new guy stumbling through his first full-gear practice; she never seemed like she doubted he’d get through it just fine.

I am, but no more than everyone else in the series who occasionally gets momentary periods of obliviousness for humor or plot reasons. It’s no different from Spike missing that he was inconveniencing everyone in Spike at your Service, everyone missing that Twilight was losing it in Lesson Zero, everyone missing how sad Pinkie was in Pinkie Pride, Rainbow missing how much she was legitimately pissing everyone off in 28 Pranks Later, etc. Half of the point of the scene was a joke that involved juxtaposing Smolder’s legitimate happiness and congrats for Spike with Spike’s building horror.
 
Also, she never figured out that the concept would not be attractive for a pony-raised dragon; her only realization on that topic is that it meant Spike wouldn’t know what it was from his upbringing, not that it would mean he wouldn’t like or look forward to it.
 
Her tone, her expressions, and her words all point towards her being completely genuine, not malicious, and you’re the only one I’ve ever seen interpret her like that in this scene.

She was in the room for an extended period of time and heard every single word of terror Spike had to make while he paced non stop. She gives him congrats, then realizes the congrats and lifestyle will not work with a pony raised dragon and proceeds to not care and instead take delight in horrifying him about the fact that he’ll now be hunted by predators while also being rejected by every friend and family member he’s ever known.
 
If the argument is that Smolder was not being malicious, then you’re arguing that Smolder is an idiot who could not see the blatant signs or words that Spike is speaking.

That was her being oblivious, NOT malicious. She had no idea it was causing Spike distress, nor does she think the molt is a bad thing. Smolder may have more affinity to pony customs than most dragons because of the school, but she still thinks very differently than Spike, who was raised by ponies and knows almost nothing of dragon culture. Smolder was legitimately trying to congratulate him.

It was extremely bad writing and it was a perfect example of how Smolder is only her own character when interacting with the other students, but when interacting with Spike, she can only be a bully or a proxy of Ember, which is why I hated her when I first saw her because I knew the writers would throw Spike under the bus and prevent him from ever having a proper friendly interaction with Ember ever again, they would take any “lesson” or “dragon only” event and have it be given to Smolder with as much or as little care as they wanted to drive the plot forward. Such as smolder being callous and uncaring despite her seeing Spike losing his mind over how this is not a good thing for a pony raised dragon.
 
She didn’t care, in fact she got a kick out of it, especially the part about how he was going to be hunted by predators.

I’m wondering if you even know what being malicious looks like, because neither of those instances you mention involve Smolder being malicious.
 
Her being confused by a pillow in Father Knows Beast is bad writing, but she did not “shit on” Spike in the least in that scene. That’s not even counting that said episode had two separate instances of Smolder volunteering her time to help Spike out.
 
Same for in Molt Down; in Smolder’s eyes, she was simply teaching a younger dragon about a dragon biological process because he was having trouble understanding what was happening to him. She was congratulating him, but only because she saw it as a good thing.

Remember how in Gauntlet of Fire, a dragon was willing to attack ponies to steal pillows?
 
Remember how in the second part of School Daze, Smolder was playing with pillows with the other student 6?
 
Remember in What Lies Beneath, Smolder casually was using pillows?
 
Remember how in Father knows Beast how when Spike made an embroidered pillow for Smolder, she basically shat on him and said “Dragons don’t use pillows”?
 
Remember how she harassed him in Molt Down for no reason other than to tell him how his life was ending?
 
The series has outright showcased that Smolder is malicious towards Spike when she finds it amusing. That is, when they don’t have her suddenly flip personalities and suddenly be Ember.
 
Reminder that Spike was not allowed to have an episode with Ember or Thorax where he could enjoy the friendship he forged with them.

Everyone in this series survives giant impacts that would instantly kill someone in real life; there’s no reason to think that dragons are special in that regard in this show (other than perhaps the giant ones just because of their size).
