Plus rarity has shown she wouldn’t put her reputation and personal life above the people she loves
Mmkay first point….That very first sentence showed something that distinguishes Rare and RD. AJ and Twi have their respective ambitions but Dash and Rare, more than anyone else, strive to be the BEST. To shine above the rest, if you will.
Sonic Rainboom showed the Rare understood that, noticing Dash’s nervousness and going well out of her way (volunteering herself as a guinea pig with Twi’s flight spell) to make sure they were all there to support her. Even when Rarity’s vanity got the better of her (which they reconciled beautifully in the end), and to save someone she truly cared about, Dash snapped out of her rut and accomplished her greatest feat in the whole series in that same episode.
It showed a deep empathy they share, they’re willingness to go out their way for one another (doing the right thing by your friends and realizing your personal faults), and their roundabout way of bringing out the best in each other. That means a hell of a lot more to me personally than “taste in music/performance style”
I think this blogger puts it best.

Particularly, on the point of their mutual need for validation. Rainbow Dash does in fact care what people think of her…A LOT. She and Rarity share that trait quite a bit as the article shows. Hell, Dash’s fear of failure is heavily influenced by how her reputation might be ruined, which, again, Rarity understands all too well. Dash’s penchant for heroism is something of a funny coincidence given Rarity’s desire for a something of a hero herself.
Given that, it’s not above the imagination that their passions could cross paths, given their tendency toward theatrics either. A performer like Dash could be the best advertisement for Rarity’s wardrobe, and modeling Rare’s designs is something Dash has grown accustomed too throughout season two.
They are pretty different on a purely superficial level. But one several occasions, they’ve never shown to let that stop theme from being on the same wavelength and generally getting along really nicely. Dash’s tendency to get worked up is often a sign of her protectiveness of people she cares about, or the happiness of others too. But even at that she’s not above realizing her faults and doing whats best for others, Rare included. Their differences in personality would really only sink their shippingif it ever resulted in any serious rift between them, which it never really has. They’ve interacted numerous times amicably, even if it’s never been the focus of any given episode. It’s a subtle connection, but it’s still there.
I never said Raridash was BETTER than any other Mane Six six. I just maintain that is a very plausible and that it works best for me.
The pairing of a Dashing, somewhat insensitive scoundrel and a proper lady isn’t anything that hasn’t been written well before. It’s the concept of taking the two of out of their comfort zones and improving one another in a significant personal way. That charm and story potential exists here too. Rainbow Dash softening up and learning to be at least a little more sensitive, and Rarity learning to loosen up here and there is not implausible (we’ve seen it throughout the show) nor should that be exclusive to Rarijack.
It’s certainly got a lot more backing it up than quite a few popular ships out there. Not really gonna name any ship in particular, but you get my point. It’s not even the most implausible mane 6 ship.
Okay, fine, if you want to debate it more then Sonic Rainboom. RD wanted to be the best young flier, and Rarity wanted to be the center of attention in that episode (like usual, not that I’m holding it against her, since it’s just her personality). There is very little they had in common there. In fact there was a show made out of their differences more than once, with Rarity basically trashing on RD’s choice of music and performance style (not that this is a big deal, since they probaby would have done the same with Rare/AJ) but still, they didn’t share anything special in common either. If you’re just talking about ambition, then Applejack has plenty of that too, and so does Twilight in a sense. She always wants to be the best at what she does, gain special favor with Celestia etc, and she works very, very hard to achieve this, maybe harder than any of the other characters work at anything, so if that’s what it hinges on then you could easily argue for Twidash or even Rarilight as easily as Raridash. The only thing RD and Rare could maybe exclusively share that way would be the whole issue with love of performing/being on “stage”, but I don’t really see how that alone could make a case for a relationship, since it still has almost nothing to say about their actual day to day lives and reflects very little on their actual personalities. It still doesn’t change the fact that Rarity is very mature/prides herself on appearance/worries about the impression she’ll make on others all the time/etc., and RD is basically the exact opposite. So in other words it’s a connection, but one that seems ultimately inconsequential when you consider what’s really important to both characters, and how they actually live their lives etc. etc…. a single thing in common doesn’t always or ever make for a viable romantic relationship, not even in pure fiction usually.
I agree with you about archetypes, there’s a lot more to any character than what’s just on surface value. I agree with that, but I don’t see how digging deeper with Rare and RD makes a better case for Raridash than any other mane 6 ship could make for itself with the same argument. A person could argue any ship for any of the ponies, and you could make anything work if you try hard enough, but that doesn’t mean it really makes sense or is the best relationship for the characters out of all the options. It’s just shoehorning for personal tastes (and maybe I’m guilty of that with Rarijack too, but I still think there’s a lot more evidence/backing for it than any other Rarity ship, and a lot of other fans apparently agree even if they don’t like shipping). So I think this comes down to purely personal taste more than anything.
I never said they were incompatible on a professional level, I said RD’s tactlessness could potentially cost Rarity some connections if she couldn’t learn to keep her mouth shut, which I think she’d have a hard time doing. She’s just abrasive in general and doesn’t care what others think about her, and in Rarity’s line of work impressions are incredibly important and can make or break deals, that’s all I meant. It’s not an insurmountable problem and it was a minor offhanded point, but it’s something to think about for people who really get into this stuff, I guess. The main point though came down to the fact that RD and Rare are very different in almost every way, and impressions are something that are VERY important to Rarity, and which her life is almost based entirely around. And RD doesn’t care about it at all and actually seems to go out of her way to be pushy and abrasive sometimes, so I think they’d have a hard time getting along with this in mind if they ever spent a lot of one on one time together.
I’m not trying to say you’re wrong about anything necessarily, and I don’t hate Raridash or think I misunderstand it at all. I just think there’s better evidence for a lot of other ships out there, but I guess if this is your taste it just is. I wasn’t trying to start an argument about it, just stating what I thought was flawed with your posts before when I first commented. I’m happy to debate it if you want to though.
As the two most ambitious ponies in the mane six who “Sonic Rainboom” showed to share a very specific empathy, I’d say I’ve brought up quite a bit that is specific to Raridash.
Her archetype isn’t really not all there is to Dash though, nor is that all there is to Rarity. They’ve had a few subtle, touching moments that kind of flesh that out fine.
I’ve already kinda pointed out how, as (rarity) put it, how they are on the same wavelength in their few interactions with one another, and the exact appeal of pairing two characters of their personalities.
I also find it funny how I kinda shot down that Dash and Rare are completely imcompatable on that professional level you brought up too, but that doesn’t matter either right?
No matter how good my overall arguments are I’m apparently wrong because…well, because RARIJACK IS OTP SO STOP SHIPPING WHAT I DON’T SHIP!
I don’t know what else to say, but…fuck it. It’s your opinion. And there’s plenty of rarijack on this site as is, so why not just leave people who might not share your tastes to have what they want?
I never said they didn’t get along. But that doesn’t mean they’d work together as more than friends, either. Because even though you raise a lot of points, there aren’t really any of them that wouldn’t apply to any of the rest of the mane 6 either.
I understand what you’re saying. But when it comes down to it Rainbow Dash pretty much comes off as a self absorbed teenager almost all of the time, and Rarity seems like the last person (pony) in the world who would have any interest in being intimately involved with that kind of personality, even if they’re friends.
I agree with both of blackbewhite’s text walls. BUT I also like Rarijack. Their pairing is obviously more noticeable in the show, but when you think about it Rarity and Rainbow Dash communicate infrequently but always seems to be on the same wavelength.
Plus couplings between someone brash/cocky and someone proper and ladylike have proven to be a very endearing trope, ala lady and the tramp, and Han/Leia (Two very well romances I find very similar to raridash)
Plus Dash has saved her llife more than any of her other friends (once every season now)
By all means enjoy your own otp. I just feel to call this ship implausible really isn’t fair.
Rarity and Dash get along just fine, really. Even at times when they were at odds they’ve never been at each others throats like Dash has her other friends.
And from season two forward we’ve seen Dash being increasingly supportive of Rarity’s trade. She helped her look nice in “find a pet” as well as with her outfit in the finale. Dash wouldn’t ruin Rarity’s career, because they seemed to have reached a good compromise there.
Hell, even in the very last episode we’ve seen Dash compliment Rarity on her pro activeness, and Rare being generally comforting.
They have differences, Dash being impatient and Brash and Rarity vain and dramatic, but throughout the series, we’ve seen that neither of them are beneath overcoming said flaws, for one another (Sonic Rainboom) and for their other friends.
@Blackbewhite2k7
Well, that’s a given about the complimentary colors. Rainbow Dash will do that with anyone, obviously.
I still prefer Rarijack. I have a really, really, really hard time seeing how Rare and RD’s personalities could work together, even if they do have similar goals, because Rarity is completely concerned about appearances all the time and RD is all about speaking her mind and not caring what others think, which I think would really grate on Rare really fast (if it didn’t end up ruining her career or professional connections with RD’s tactlessness). AJ may be a lot of things and her and Rarity have their differences too, but at least AJ is polite and knows how to be cordial, and I get the feeling that’s a big thing for Rarity.
Same with Flarity/Rarishy maybe… I just can’t see Rarity with anyone so cocky/brash/immature.
Two ambitious and confident mares ready to take the world by storm! Two mares in two very different positions with the same goal in mind: to be the very best in their industry/profession.
And the color complementarity is a bonus!
Agreed.
While it may not be immediately obvious, it holds up really well with some observation. It’d be a challenging relationship, but what relationship isn’t? That’s what makes it worth it.
And the fact that their designs and color schemes compliment one another’s really nicely helps, too.
AND THEY’RE CUTE TOGETHER!
True.
Nothing! I just knew you’d respond on a Raridash picture! :D
Such an unappreciated ship…
Yeah? What’s wrong?
