The only connection Alter needed was that it happened to be a parasite. Any other factor just wasn’t registering.

One of the previous pictures showed a flashback to a kind of similar looking parasite that had completely taken over somepony…

there’s no honest to god explanation for how that tail thing is a parasite to begin with.
remember, serene isn’t even of this world, that tail thing could be a part of her actual biology.
plus, until that card is revealed, we don’t know shit about anything.
