Fuck off, you hired em liar
However…it always struck me as ridiculous that Hasbro ever allowed it. Ever. As in, if I ran Hasbro, this would’ve been C&D’d the instant I heard about it. People bitch about Hasbro making Twilight an alicorn. And then also bitch about Hasbro stopping Twilight from pointlessly kicking the shit out of her five best friends. Which is really more OOC? Which is really more outside the whole underlying theme of the show? Hardcore porn of the characters is less anti-MLP:FiM than Fighting is Magic was. Serious fans of the show could tell the difference. But it was so well done that occasional viewers and even casual fans could’ve mistaken it for an officially sanctioned product.
Hasbro was remarkably lenient with it letting it go on as long as they did. You should thank them for every round of Fighting is Magic you got to play, because they shouldn’t have let you play it at all. The time you got with it was a gift. Unfortunately, when its popularity escaped the confines of the hardcore fans, they couldn’t be lenient any more. If it had remained an underground sensation secretly traded among meetup-going Bronies, we’d probably still have it. It wasn’t Hasbro’s fault. They gave it more rope than they should have. The developers and fans were the ones who used it to tie the noose. It’s unfortunate that Hasbro decided to kill it at this point in its development. But what else could they do? They couldn’t go to the developers and say, “We’ll sanction this as long as you prevent it from finding an audience outside serious Brony groups.” The developers wouldn’t have been able to enforce that, even if they were willing. The realistic alternative was even more unfortunate: that they would’ve killed it much earlier. Not that they would’ve let it get completed and widely distributed.
I’d go so far to say it’s a little bit of both malice AND stupidity. Both traits seem to be alarmingly prevalent in society nowadays.
“Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.”
I don’t think Hasbro is intentionally trying to destroy the fandom, but I do think that they aren’t managing it well
Then they should man up and take criticism! We need to stop letting soccer moms ruin everything!
“Oh no! Those pastel colored ponies are beating each other up! Better blame the company than taking responsibility and keeping my kid from watching it!”
You sir, are a lantern in the middle of the darkness created by fanboys.
Sign it if you want your precious Fighting is Magic to live.
Corporate cowardice explains it, but doesn’t justify it in the slightest.
Think about how many pony fan projects fall apart while in development. Hasbro most likely has a “wait and see” approach to these things. If the project falls apart then there is no need to waste their lawyers on it. It was only now that Fighting Is Magic was near completion and getting big coverage due to the EVO completion that they said “Ok, we have to put our foot down”.
Fighting Is Magic looks so professional that I bet a lot of people would mistake it for an actual Hasbro product. Then you just need FOX news or some other media outlet going “Hasbro is selling violent fighting games to your little girls!” and all hell breaks loose for Hasbro.
<insert wild speculation here>
In all honesty, this was only a matter of time. I mean, it made money in EVO2K13. Granted, it was for charity, but I don’t think they knew that.
I was pissed too, and my first reaction was cancelling recording on all Hub shows and blocking it from my DVR forever. Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed and I realized it’s not worth getting worked up over.
TL;DR, does it suck? Yes. Will it lead to a slippery slope of copyright bullshit? No. Will you watch the show regardless? Of course you will, don’t lie.
The fans give tons of free exposure to this series with their works. Suddenly changing gears and saying “you can’t do this anymore, or this, or that, etc…” is an insult and they very much risk losing a huge chunk of the fandom.
Forget Alicorn Twilight. If Hasbro starts C&Ding even more fan works and removes the YouTube episodes (which they were completely fine with for years), and overall acts dickish to their fanbases, then this show won’t last past the fourth season.
They were not in danger of losing the trademark to genericity and there was no chance of it making them lose profits. There is no reason for this C&D.
What have we become?
Dick move with Friendship is Fighting, though.
Don’t change the subject! I want to hear more about your thought on the Semites/Satanists/Nazis who are supposedly running Hasbro.
So Hasbro killed fighting is magic?
