Back in the 40s (or maybe even the 30s, I’m going off the top of my head here) a “hipster” (also spelled “hepster”) was a white guy who liked jazz. And the beatniks were directly descended from that subculture. And for that matter, the hippies were directly descended from the beatniks.

Granted, this century’s hipsters don’t have much to do with any of those subcultures.
