Dark comedy. There was even a joke in a season finale about how the show overdoes “killing characters” jokes, and such for viewership.
Maybe ‘cause they already did a MLP parody with Apocalypse Ponies, though that was more G1 based.
It’d be cool if they got Tara Strong in it, I think she was in Robot Chicken before.
I remember they got Cree Summer Franks, and Frank Welker to reprise their characters before in an Inspector Gadget/Terminator parody before.

You know I was one of the newer episodes a while ago and there was a sketch about a Brodeo which is short for Brony Rodeo. Instead of horses they ride men wearing pony costumes. And the brony shown was dressed as a blue pony with a rainbow mane and tail.
I fear some bronies might get butthurt over that, regardless how it’s handled.
Heck, some got angry over the CN show MAD’s parodies, even though they were pretty tame, respectful to the source material, and even featured Tara Strong in them. (And even a brony shout-out.)
Since they were hired by other people to make promotions for their content, it would be understandable for Robot Chicken to be more clean with their promotional sketches.
Yeah, as much as I like dark or poopy humor, they have cleaner and still funny sketches, as well.
Not to mention, the “Robot Chicken” sketches for Nintendo’s 2014 E3 presentation were fairly clean, yet were still pricelesss.
