Him losing his magic to the trio was totally not part of his plan.  
He arrogantly didn’t worry due to he’s the “safety net” of the bloody plan here until he somehow didn’t see the trio had the bell and used it on him.  
He was planning on using his magic if things didn’t go what he thought for Twilight, him losing that means he can’t bail Twilight out of something HE caused.  
That’s one thing that made him stupid in this plan, he didn’t see the betrayal coming and now he’s no longer the stupid “safety net”, if he planned that to happen then that makes his plan even MORE reckless.
