I imagine that, while Shining was under Chrysalis’ control (before Twilight ruined her plans in “A Canterlot Wedding”), she frequently had Shining incubating her eggs after he fertilized them. She probably convinced him that either she was just pegging him, or that all alicorns had cocks (which, for all we know, they just might).
