Fluttershy: Even after our all-night study session, I still don’t know the difference between vaporization and sublimation.

FLUTTERSHY, vaporization is the conversion of a liquid to a gas state at low temperature, if the liquid has a very small vapor pressure, that is, the forces that keeps the liquid molecules together is less than the forces by the atmospheric molecules pushing down on the liquid, hence why no bubbles are formed during evaporation (e.g. acetone, aka nail polish remover, evaporates under room temperature)

DO NOT confuse this with boiling, as this same transition from liquid to gas occurs when the temperature reaches a boiling point (this happens when vapor pressure equals to atmospheric pressure, hence why there are bubbles forming within the liquid during boiling)

Sublimation occurs when a solid transforms into a gas WITHOUT passing through the intermediate liquid state (e.g. solid dried ice transforms into carbon dioxide); this occurs when so much heat is absorbed under low air pressure, that the atoms in their solid state move fast enough to overcome the attractive forces and quickly escape into gas form, thereby bypassing the liquid state)
