Well we know that Siege of the Crystal Empire is not canon due to this. But Sombra’s origins from FIENDship is Magic Issue #1 is canon. Because in the season 6 premiere one of the Crystal Ponies (whose name was “Scarlet Heart”) and Spike mentions that Spike saved the Crystal Empire from King Sombra because he died in the end of the season 3 premiere. And also in the Season 5 finale, Twilight mentioned about how King Sombra was defeated. So I don’t know why they brought King Sombra back to life in the final season. I never watch it yet. In canon, King Sombra and Rafisnt Hope are no longer friends because she discovered why all the other Crystal Ponies are not friends with Sombra in his life as a colt after being banished out of the umbrum realm and turned into a unicorn. I agreed that Sombra’s parents are umbrums because I agreed that His parents died Before Sombra turned into a pony when he was a shadow colt (which is a young umbrum). His mother’s spirit is a dark shadowy crystal. So I don’t think that FIENDship is Magic Issue #1 is non-canon because if Siege of the Crystal Empire is non-canon to the TV show, then I think Ed that Rabia, Ira, and the other Umbrum would stayed in their realm/prison. And Radiant Hope? Well, she’s an immortal now, and we don’t know what happened to her in the TV show when Siege of the Crystal Empire is uncanonical. Well because when King Sombra ruled the Crystal Empire a millennium ago, he ordered some Crystal Ponies to released and free the Umbrum from their imprisonment in their shadow realm. But he failed after being banished to the Frozen North by Celestia and Luna. King Sombra would have turned Celestia, Luna, and Shining Armor in crystal statues instead of stone in the comics.

IDW Sombra was even better, he defeated Celestia and Luna with one-shot, withstood a blast from Twilight, and was no nonsense and serious unlike Season 9’s buffoon. If we had IDW Sombra on the show, a lot more damage would have been caused.

The season 10 comic should have a arc around sombra’s final return and maybe have him controlling the mane 6 and the student six, pillars, and the princesses to free them and reform sombra, or gen 5 primer can also be about sombra

That’s not the point given. Sure Discord could save them, but King Sombra DIDN’T attempt anything. Also, it’s because of Discord that whole mess happened to begin with, and why that whole plot was just an absolute waste of time. Still ridiculous they’d let Discord not join them on the stone podium for that, because face it, that was just insane stupid. Even more stupid than Sombra not finishing off his enemies when he had the chance.

You guys keep saying “he should have killed the main 6 when he could” except, do you really think Discord would have let him? Especially fluttershy.
Personally I don’t see any way Sombra could have done anything about Discord, or even had thought about what to do to stop him. Sombra only did what Discord allowed him to do, and if he had ever stepped out of line and actually threatened the likes of Fluttershy in any real way, Discord would just have slapped him around for a bit like the little bitch he is and told him to knock it off.

Not really. His destruction of the tree was undone by the next episode, he didn’t finish his enemies when he had the chance, he only managed to conquer Canterlot because the princesses weren’t there, and he massively overestimated himself against Discord (who could have beaten him anytime he wanted to).

I think we shouldn’t forget how Sombra absolutely wrecked the mane six were throughout the 2nd part, emotionally and psychologically. They felt miserable and hopeless pretty much the whole time. I don’t know if there’s ever been an MLP episode with all six ponies so deeply upset, and that’s saying something. That’s why he didn’t enslave their minds, he wanted their suffering. I’d daresay they couldn’t win, if Discord didn’t give them that badly needed morale boost with his Big Speech.

…but they still have free will to do anything. That’s the whole problem with the scene, he isn’t rendering them helpless, he’s still giving them a chance as do all typical plot-driven villains do just so the good guys get their turn around and save the day. It’s seen countless times in media, even if it goes against everything the villain is known for.

@Shimmering Spectacle
He underestimated the Mane 6, he thought that councouring and hypnotized everypony friends and family in Ponyville is already enough for them.

Which is the most cliché villain trope of the ages, and is quite frankly the dumbest thing a villain could do despite the previous notion of them being incredibly smart and cunning. Really breaks the immersion.
