Thanks to Frenemies, which is still the best episode of the season, people came to believe that because they came to agree to cooperate, they were thus on the path to redemption, the denouncement of friendship as a disease be damned. As one decent take put it, the significance of their cooperation got bloated. I’ll admit, though, that them genuinely becoming friends and having to employ cognitive dissonance of denying it to stay opposed to every pony else would be an interesting direction.
