That’s it exactly; the difference between using stolen Chaos Magic from the bell and stealing it straight from Discord’s face is the difference between riding a horse to buy groceries and just eating it instead. It was kinda obvious during the episode, since Tirek only got buffed by draining Discord but Cozy immediately turned into Nightmare Moron.

I mostly assumed it to be sort of the other way around, that Tirek was just converting everyone’s magic into power for himself in a way that made it all usable, sort of like digestion (the process WAS him pretty much eating it - you might even remember him throwing up Chrysalis’ magic in S9E8), and the bell transfers it more directly and “as is”, unprocessed.
 
Honestly, I think the whole digestion parallel should be more than enough to cover for this “inconsistency”. And Grogar’s old magic might just be more generic so everyone can make use of it. Or if you wanna go a bit crazy with headcanons, it sat in that bell long enough that it settled down into such a state.

Discord’s magic was sucked up by Tirek directly from the source. In the case of the Season 9 finale, Discord’s magic was inside of a bell. I assume that the method in which Tirek uses to absorb the magic depends a lot on how it is absorbed. He can only absorb Discord’s magic if he absorbs it directly from the source, like in Twilight’s Kingdom. However, in this case, it would be absorbed from a second hand source (Grogar’s bell) instead of directly from Discord, rendering it unusable.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Discord is ALWAYS screwing around. Nothing he ever does will ever make sense because people keep asking “does it make sense?” when the question they should be asking is “is it fun for Discord?”

dudes come on /: as you can see discord is to smart…even the fandom was surprised that he was grogar. and as he said in season 9 final we know he makes challenges for twilight like in season 4 final he Released tirek to attack. because he knew that twilight were feeling useless as a princess. and when celestia chosen discord to defeat tirek, twilight gets more sad. so discord DID betray to force celestia to choose twilight. veritably…can not you see how smart he is?…or you really forgot that discord can sense tireks magic…season 9 episode 17…see!! obviously he was aware.

When tirek took discord’s magic he had a lot magic from tons of pony’s and that should counteract the chaos magic but in cozy’s case she would need a lot of magic to counteract it out.

Actually that is a question…if someone else got Discords Magic couldn’t Tirek just drain them and have the magic itself without the chaos.  
I know they wouldn’t because they don’t trust one another like that but hypothetically with Tireks skills they could have taken the Princesses magic along with Discords and distributed it evenly

Remember how Tirek opened a portal to Tartarus before he drained Discord’s magic?
 
It isn’t a stretch to assume teleporting others behind him in bubbles is actually just one of the powers he can do, at full power.
 
Tirek has never demonstrated say, that he knows how to bake pies because he ate Pinkie’s magic.
 
Also, I think it should be noted that in S4, Tirek barely grew from eating Discord’s magic, unlike the alicorn magic (as misleadingly pictured here), almost like he wasn’t getting a lot from it.
 
If Tirek actually had Discord’s variety of abilities at his disposal, Twilight would’ve been obliterated in that fight.

He never used Chaos Magic directly. Even if he took it all back then he never used it on anyone or for himself. At best he contained it and he didn’t have it for very long.

I always assumed, the way Tirek stole magic, he “assimilated” any kind he was stealing into HIS demonic variety. And didn’t necessarily ‘absorb’ everypony’s special talents and stuff, as much as he simply transferred their raw essence into what he could metabolize for his own gains.
 
Hence why he grew a lot more from the Mane Six’s magic than Discord’s, I think. Because Discord’s magic is probably more VERSATILE than it is purely quantifiably “powerful”, whereas The Mane Six had a lot more magic in them, collectively.
