Rarity may use her magic primarily as a tool, but it’s a very refined tool. As a seamstress, she’s regularly levitating multiple objects and manipulating them with millimeter-scale precision. That’s not a small feat. Give the marshmallow her due credit.
Sweetie does seem to have a genuine interest in magic, where as Rarity sees it as a tool at best. She’s not very good at it true, but then neither was Twilight when she was younger.
Edited
That was when those plunder vines was causing havoc around ponyville.
@mjangelvortex
With all the spells she got from learning with twilight and/or starlight, I say she already surpasses her older sister
Edited
If she’s getting lessons from both Twilight and Starlight, I can believe that Sweetie can learn the teleportation spell. It doesn’t mean she can use it well (as seen by the amount of pain she was in after she did it), but she can do it.
That’s possible.
@northern haste
Yeah, when her magic went out of control that one time, it was strong enough to levitate her.
@Philweasel
well the way sweetie belle been learning, i think that it was recently starlight that was teaching her some spells, like how in surf and/or turf, she was using an accelero spell to go at like mach 1(speed of sound), which i know that twilight doesn’t the spell, yet starlight does, so when star was starting to live in twilight’s castle, it could show that star was teaching the cmc more then twi, probably because she’s been getting busy with the school of friendship, royal duties, going out handling friendship problems, etc.
@Beau Skunky
I don’t even think sweetie Belle was ever established to have weak magic
Edited
You may have a point. People forgot, because “Twilight Time” was so many years ago, and Twilight teaching Sweetie magic hasn’t been regarded much sense.
It’s not like Twilight is the only pony in the universe capable of it. Heck, Starlight’s been known to teleport-spam, as well. Though, like Twilight, she’s been established as pretty powerful, as well. (Much to the ire of some fans.) Though, as Rarity showed in the finale unicorns can sometimes have sudden bursts of power in intense situations, and that’s been established to happen to baby unicorns, (and alicorns) as well.
I feel people have forgotten that Sweetie is explicitly shown learning magic from Twilight. She’s likely been trying to pull of teleportation ever since Twilight good naturedly explained to her the fundamentals.
Now Sweetie doesn’t specifically have a magic cutie mark, but pulling off a very short ranged, uncontrolled, painful version of her teacher’s signature spell isn’t exactly a leap of logic even with the rules Boast Busters established.
Makes me wonder how there seem to be more books about magic (beyond light and telekinesis, that is) than ponies who can make use of them. Star Swirl the Bearded Wing at Canterlot Library, anypony?
Also, can someone please teach Trixie teleportation so she quits making a fool of herself by throwing smokebombs and then galloping away in plain sight?
@Jarkes
Yeah, people whom romanticize the earlier seasons, (and demonize the later ones) oftentimes ignore, or don’t notice Season 1&2 had issues too.
The same Boast Busters that had its “rules” almost immediately thrown out even within season 1? The same Boast Busters where Twilight showed a display of ridiculous long-distance magic (while still a regular unicorn mind you) that she’s never shown since? The same Boast Busters that implied that Twilight numbered all the spells she learned, which also never came up again? That Boast Busters?
Or the same season 1 where Twilight rather frequently forgot to teleport away from danger? Or the same season 1 where Twilight had a panicked teleport reaction that left her woozy and charred and had her state that she was surprised she had even done it? That season 1?
I know continuity has never been this show’s strong suit even in the later, more continuity-heavy seasons… but did it hurt your arms reaching that far?

As I said before, they mey have grown physically, yet not mentally.
I was actually thinking of a magic version of an adrenaline Rush and after doing a bit of googling I discovered it can actually kill you
Yeah, plus her horn/head hurt afterwards.
not perfectly at her mental state.
Also, showing she teleported into a haystack kinda shows she can’t pull it off perfectly either, so she barely even managed it.
So maybe it is a power, or adrenaline thing, seeing as she can’t do it anytime, or very well.
yeah she’s did it that way because she wanted to save biscuit there.
That episode didn’t really do that, and just because Sweetie barely managed it once, (and her temporary adult body is likely more powerful then a filly’s, so your argument that “any foal can do it,” is kinda unfounded, no offense) and during a tense/survival situation, (comparable to say a person getting a huge strength/adrenaline rush in a similar situation IRL) doesn’t mean she can do it any time, or anyone can do it.
And there’s no proof Rarity can do it either.
Boast Busters explains the basic rules of unicorn magic, I’m unsure if teleportation was mentioned in that specific episode but I do recall Twilight mentioning it.
What that episode does clearly state however is that unicorns known a few basic spells like telekinesis and light, plus a few spells related to their special talent. The exception is those whose special talent is magic who are basically wizards and can learn whatever spells they want if given enough practise.
These ponies where the only unicorns seen teleporting in the show previously, reinforcing through that ever beloved storytelling method of “show-don’t-tell” that this was not a skill that anypony could pull off, it was due to their special talent in magic.
And now any random unicorn can do it, including children. Hell, including children in adult bodies. So, time for me to make a compilation of times Rarity could have saved herself a ton of drama if she just teleported at a certain point in the story, I’m sure to have loads of fun watching the writing of formally good episodes disintegrate in front of me. =_=
Lessons from Twilight mean all of diddly squat if she doesn’t have a special talent in magic. And no, I refuse to even entertain the idea that teleportation can be done by any unicorn ever but only a select few actually bother to learn it, that is so beyond stupid it’s barely worth considering. There are so many situations-especially life threatening ones-in which even an emergency once-per-day teleport would be so bloody useful that the entire unicorn tribe would have to be as thick as bricks to not have it as universal teaching-as demonstrated by this very scene in fact.
@FeatherTrap
Guys, She knows how to teleport because starlight’s been teaching her some things that no other common unicorn knows.
I was only quoting you
No, actually I was agreeing with you that it was difficult for her.
Edited
when did the show actually give those rules?
and again it wasn’t easy on Sweetie Belle also rarity didn’t get lessons from Twilight
Edited
I am pointing out that they violated a previously established rule. You can characterise that however you like as long as you understand that your disingenuous attempts to paint people as throwing immature temper tantrums do not serve as rebuttals of that point.
Rule was established, then rule was broken. This retroactively changes the stakes of every previous episode and will make several of them worse, now that I know that Rarity can teleport out of danger if she just wills it hard enough. This frustrates me. End of story.
