The fandom is based around a show that more or less portrays a utopia, and features a wide ensemble cast that viewers can get attached to and relate too. Each episode deals with some kind of moral lesson or view of the human condition, and as each season has come along has brought in more fantastical elements and exploration of new lands, new species, new civilizations, and new ideas. The series has an extremely positive outlook, and despite flaws in both the world and its inhabitants, all the characters try to be better, and embody ideals to aspire to, and the show gives the overall message that things can get better and that people can make it better.


 
So yes, I say Bronies are a lot like Trekkies because Friendship is Magic is a lot like Star Trek.
