Alicorns were Lauren Faust’s addition to the show lore. Consider that Spike is a character spanning multiple generations; changing him was arguably a bigger deal than introducing a new species of pony.
what about making twi an alicon? and the introducing alicorns to the show?
Yeah, neither G1 Spike nor G3 Spike had them. That’s why they’re such a big deal; it’s one of the biggest changes to a character Hasbro has done.
G1 Spike was a doofus, though. He didn’t gain his snark until G3.
